Food and fashions at the Green Forest.
by Muriel Trott
Our most recent dining out for the Village
Squire took us to a fashion show and
Luncheon in mid-May at the Green Forest
Motel, Grand Bend -an event sponsored by
the Huron County Playhouse Guild. Both the
show and the Luncheon were a hit, with the
emphasis on the latter. But then we all can't
be bikini size, can we?
In the heart of the Blue Water Country the
Green Forest Motor Hotel and Lodge is
located on Highway 21, two blocks south of
the bridge at Grand Bend, in a -picturesque
setting, with a green forest background
through which flows the Ausable River.
"If you believe that your vacation meals
should be a little more sumptous than your
daily fare " is one of the slogans used by
Pete and Carol Deitz who purchased the
business two years ago. Incidentally Carol
(Lewis) served as a Nursing Sister at the
former Canadian Forces Base, Clinton. Their
cook, Eileen Cleave, was formerly with the
staff at the Little Inn at Bayfield some time
back, when it was under a former ownership.
With more than 90 reservations, the Guild
Committee made the wise choice of a salad
plate. It proved to be a carefully prepared and
appetizing arrangement of turkey, ham, fresh
crisp tossed salad a potato and a macaroni
salad, relishes, rolls and peach halves. For
those with the sweet tooth, there was plenty
of choice. Plates arranged with butter tarts,
lemon curd tarts, brownies and petits fours
were placed at each table. We found them
tasty with the generous supply of coffee so
promptly served by the waitresses.
Normally the salad plate is listed at $3.50
on the dinner menu which offers fresh lake
Huron fish at $4; red brand T-bone steak with
sauteed mushrooms, $6.25 to Surf and Turf,
with sauteed mushrooms at $7.95. The order
includes soup, or juice, hot rolls, chef's salad,
and two vegetables. Dessert and beverage
are extra.
We found that along with the good food,
that the atmosphere was relaxing and
pleasant. Don Sheppard, of Grand Bend, who
was at the organ, is a pro, and his music,
(much of it was from recent Broadway
musicals) added to the particular occasion.
At an informal luncheon this week we
tasted for the first time, a rhubarb cocktail,
and were so taken with it (along with a
number of other guests) that we asked for the
use of it for the column. (We do not intend to
get into the recipe business)
Wash, cut up, but do not peel 4 cups fresh
pink rhubarb. Place in a large pot, cover with
6 cups water (perhaps to one inch over the top
of the rhubarb.) Cook until tender. Put
through a fine sieve (do not press). Measure
liquid while it is still hot, and to three cups of
fluid add one cup granulated sugar. Stirl until
dissolved. Cool to room temperature, and add
one quarter cup of EITHER lemon, orange, or
pineapple juice.
This can be poured into glass jars (do not
fill them), chill, and place in the freezer (cap
when frozen).
To use as a punch, add equal quantities of
chilled ginger -ale or soda water.
Let your tastebuds make the judgement -
you'll be surprised how pleasing this can be.
Ours was served from a tall cut -glass pitcher.
We learned that it was from last year's crop of
rhubarb, and had been preserved in the
freezer.
