a big bash
in Mitchell.
For most towns, the celebration of the
centennial of the town is a big occasion. This
area will see a spate of such celebrations over
the next few years as various towns mark
their 100 anniversary of their incorporation
One of the first is Mitchell.
And celebrate Mitchell will, with a big blow
out from June 29 -July 4.
The big event which . has seen long
preparation by a committee headed by local
photographer Floyd Wassman will get
underway J une 29 with events such as a swim
meet in the Lions' pool, a softball
tournament, a golf tournament, a tractor pull,
a beauty contest at the public school
auditorium and a pork barbecue. The evening
will see, the Centennial Ball featuring a
16 -piece orchestra, at the memorial arena.
Sunday there will be special church
services in the morning with a chicken
barbecue in the afternoon. There will be a
pioneer display of soap making, quilting and
butter making at the Crystal Palace and the
evening will see a fiddlers contest at the
arena.
Monday will be kicked off by a pancake
breakfast. The rest of the morning will be
dedicated to back to school and a history fair.
There will be a soap box derby and at one
p.m. there will be the big parade featuring
the K -W Flying Dutchmen Marching Band,
antique cars, floats etc.
There will be a horseshoe tournament at
the horseshoe pits at the town hall and an arts
and crafts display inside the town hall. The
display of pioneer crafts will continue at the
Crystal Palace through July 3. A talent and
variety concert featuring local talent will be
held at the high school on July 1.
The big even on July 2 will be the
centennial band tattoo of pipe and brass
bands at 7:30 in the evening. Featured will be
James Allen Ford, a Mitchell native who will
perform a cornet solo with the backing of the
Stratford Legion Concert Band.
J my 3 is pioneer day with a back to school
bus trip in the morning followed by a
centennial parade of antique cars and
machinery at 2 p.m. An old-timers ball game
will be held and a beef barbecue is scheduled
to begin at 4 p.m. The evening will see a
horse show and a tug-of-war. A centennial
dance -concert will he held at the high school
featuring a band called Thundermug. A
second oldtime dance will be held at the
arena.
J my 4 will see a softball tournament for
boys, a free film festival at the public school
and the whole week is capped off with the
Tommy Hunter Show in the arena in the
evening. Things will tail off with a shirt -tale
parade at 11 p.m.
Thousands of people, both oldtimers from
Mitchel; and people that never lived there will
be taking part in this big week of activities.
