Village Squire, 1974-01, Page 26Ocean Hotel, so it is clean and homey, albeit
simple.
This night, our hosts insisted on paying for
the beer. It was a friendly gesture to top off a
good evening of srnall talk with some fine
people -- in their own bailiwick.
Not all tourists, of course, want to venture
outside of the regular tourist areas. But some
would enjoy spending a little time at the
Eagle Rock, or a similar club, talking to the
locals about politics, sports and other
Bahamian topics.
rhe Government of Prime Minister Lynden
O. Pindling has taken several steps over the
past few years to ensure visitors have the
chance, if they so desire, to sample a taste of
the Bahamian way of life. For exam le,
Bahamas Goombay Summer was inaugurated
three years ago as a unique, summer -long
folk festival and people to people program,
designed to expose Bahamian culture to
visitors. All three major areas -- Nassau,
Freeport and the Out Islands -- celebrate
Goombay Summer.
Most of the activities will occur in the
downtown tourist area. But Bahamians like
John Williams, who. I like so many of his
countrymen, depend on tourism for a living,
would like to see more people come 'over the
hill'. This is where the real culture of the
Bahamas can be found.
What was is there...
What have you done to preserve your land
What have you done today
What have you done to keep the land, not give it all away.
Was there something you might have done as you look into the past
Don't wait to tomorrow, start right now
'/Take the reins in your hands and start to plow
a road that leads from yesterday
'I'o the things that you can do today.
Is there something you want to change
Your life perhaps to re -arrange.
You've been placed on this earth in your very own spot
Climb out of your rut, get out of your slot
You're a person not just any old thing
Put your feet on the ground, raise your head up high
Straighten your shoulders, swing from the thigh
There is one thing we all must do
Look around and assess the view.
Is there something to be cleaned, is there something to be done
Do I need some help from you --before I can help a few.
Let us come together, for none of us can weather
A stormy life of strike - alone
We must bring a ray of sunshine into lives that really have none
While we laugh and while we cry, let's get to work before we die
You ask me and I'll ask you, what is there for us to do.
Let's not give our land away, let's preserve life - start today.
