There is an old tradition to summer stock theatrt, a
sort of country gentility about it, a glorious shabbiness.
Unfortunately, in many areas the tradition is dying. In
the eastern United States area where summer stock used
to flourish, it has become mainly a thing of the past.
So it was a brave idea when Jim Murphy a young pro-
ducer -director from Toronto decided to start a summer
stock theater in Grand Bend. So far, despite some prob-
lems and disappointments, it seems to be waking. See
the story on page 4.
If you've ever walked into a closet and closed the door
behind you, then dropped something on the floor and
tried to find it in the dark, you know a little of what
it is to be blind. But you can always open the door, a
turn on a light, and your problem is over. Not so for
the blind. That's why it is so amazing to see what some
people have learned to do without the use of their eyes.
See Harold Vodden's story on page 11.
Just as professional theatre is a new thing to Huron
county, so is professional art. The Heim Gallery near
Wingham gives local people a chance to see professional
art right in their own back yard. The problem is, few
have seen it. (Story on page 8).
Follow up...
From the number of comments we've had from readers
after the first two issues of Village Squire, we think
people seem to like it very much. The problem is, we
know it, but our advertisers have to take our word for
it, and advertisers are what makes this magazine go.
There are two ways our readers could help let the
advertisers know they read the magazine, first through
letters to the editor, and second by letting an advertiser
know when they visit his store that they saw his ad in
Village Squire. We're happy, even eager to have you
write to us and tell us what you like AND w hat you
don't like about the magazine. We're eager to hear your
suggestions.
Would you like to give us a hand to stake store this
magazine goes on for years?
