From Littl.e Match G
BY IIRANS CHRIISTHAN ANDERSEN
It was terrify cold; it snowed and was
already almost dark, and evening came on,
the last evening of the year. Da. the cold and
gloom a poor little girl, bareheaded and
barefoot, was walking through the streets.
Shivering with cold and hunger, she crept
along, a picture of misery, poor little girl!
The snowflakes covered her long fair hair,
which fell in pretty curls over her neck; but
she did not think of that now. In all the win-
dows lights were shining, and there was a
glorious smell of roast goose, for it was New
Year's Eve. Yes, she thought of that!
Her little hands were almost benumbed
with the cold. Ah, a match might do her
good, if she could only draw one from the
bundle and rub it against the wall and warm
her hands at it. She drew one out. -r-atch!
how it sputtered and burned! It was a warm,
bright flame, like a little candle, when she
held her hands over it; it was a wonderful
little light!
She rubbed another match against the
wall; it became bright again, and in the
brightness her old grandmother stood clear
and shining, mild and lovely.
And she hastily rubbed the whole bundle
of matches, for she wished to hold her
grandmother fast. And the matches burned
with such a glow that it became brighter
than in the middle of the day; grandmother
had never been so large or so beautiful. She
took the little girl in her arms, and both flew
in brightness and joy above the earth, very
very high, and up there was neither cold,
nor hunger, nor care - they were with God.

Put hats on
holiday jam
For those people on your Christmas list
who seem to have everything, why not bun-
dle- up some of your homemade jams and
jellies in a wicker basket and dress them up
in fabric "hats", says Clothing arid Textiles
Specialist Margaret Loewen of the Ontario
ministry ' of agriculture and food's rural
organizations and services branch?
To make the "hats" cut a circle of cotton
print fabric the diameter of the jar lid plus
at least eight centimetres (three inches) —
depending on the height of the lid.
For example, cut a 13 cm (five in.)
diameter circle for a five cm (two in.) jar
lid.
Finish the raw edge by pressing three
milimetre ' (1/8 in.) elastic over this . mark
and machine zig zag over theelastic, being
careful to avoid catching the elastic in your
stitching.
Draw up the elastic so that it fits the jar,
tie the ends and trim.
Put the cover over the jar lid and tie up
with ribbon.
Bundle up all the jars, place in a wicker
basket, and deliver to your friends just
before Christmas. •
And be sure to label your jam and jelly
jars so your friends will know these came
fresh froth your kitchen.
