depieting Craik, Saskatchewan
To the Editor:
Does CRAJ[K, SASKATCHEWAN mean
anything to yoga or your readers? What
comes to mind when people hear or see
this term? From the many comments .be-
ing received since the release of "Craik -
The Friendliest P I ce by a Damsite", one
is madelaware of how many strong reac-
tions are. "I have said you can't pant people
you have known and loved in a history
book - but you people did just that - brought
them back to life." 1 am having a wonder-
ful time reviving the past and getting ac-
quainted with the past.
What prompts a communit to undertake
the monumental task of producing a
history book? The desire to preserve a fac-
tual account of the birth and growth of
their particular area is certainly a part of
it. Capturing the unique personalities, the
folklore, the personalities, the folklore, the
reminiscences of those who played a part
in the development of a community is what
gives flavor to a 'statistical chronical. I is
while researching records and compiling
submitted materials that one becomes
aware as of how the actions of so many
who have gone before, influence the stan-
dard of living enjoyed today. It is a humbl-
ing experience. One comes to appreciate
more acutely the vision, foresight and
dedication of the early settlers. As with
other projects tackled by willing
volunteers, working together to provide a
community history in a permanent book
form has , unsuspected awards. That ef-
fects will prove to be far reaching pro-
bably hasn't occurred to them. As an
amateur historian and genealogist, I can
say that you have put together a story

"In The Heart Of Downtown Varna"
about out home town -and area that decen-
dants will refer to for decades.
Perhaps no one can say for certain why
community histones get written. Results
and effects are ; .o more easily identified. It
is a book anyone would be proud to own;
thanks for all the time and dedication that
had to be given; it is truly a book one can
be proud to have on their bookshelves.
There is little doubt that a book upon
whose pages the warp and woof of every-
day life of one's ancestors is panoramical-
ly woven, quickly becomes a treasured
family heirloom. As with all books, a com-
munity "history book" is' a gift, that keeps
on giving.
Preparing a copy of "Craik - The
Friendliest Place by a Damsite" for mail-
ing to transplanted Craikites is proving to
be a delightful task. As each destination is
recorded, . the map, like Grandmother's
patchwork quilt, continues to spread and
also like that quilt gives a feeling of
warmth to the recipient.
