The Lucknow Sentinel, 1986-12-03, Page 6if Pap 6 --Lei.° item Sentinel, Wednesdays December c$,: noes "The Light of the World" theme of UCW meeting Unit 1 By -Noma Campbell The members of Unit 1 of the Laueknow United Church Women met in the Church Parlour November 25 with an attendance of 13. Grace Gibson welcomed all present and Mrs. Wes ',itc. iie presided at the piano for several favorite Christmas hymns. The rollcall was answered with a Bible verse pertaining to , the Birth of Christ. Happy Birthday was sung for Mrs. William Humphrey and Clara Raynard and the birthday jar was passed for donations. It was decided to continue donating to the jar for another year and then decide on disposing of the contents to a worthy cause. A short discussion on Community Friendship resulted in several members offering to visit shut-ins with a small treat before Christmas and whenever possilbe throughout the year, Reports were read by several members and Mrs. Stuart Reavie reported that a newsletter would soon be printed showing many important events in the church. The Devotional part in the meeting was chaired by Mrs. Eric Hackett assisted by Mrs. Gordon Morrison. The theme "The Light of the World" was ..- chosen. The Open Bible, a burning kerosine lamp on the table and candles on the piano illustrated the thought and belief that Jesus is the Light of the World, and it is His birthday we must remember in all our celebrations. Mrs. Gordon Morrison read the Scrip- ture and also the Meditation entitled "Christmas is For All". So often we miss the real meaning of.. that first Christmas and show too much interest in ourselves and gift giving and miss the real meaning of the Babe born to be the reason. for it all. Jean Conley favored the members with many selections on her auto -harp. Mrs. Hackett read a story about a family gathering at "Grampa : ill's" bringing back many happy memories of the past.. A contest was enjoyed. Grace was sung and a delicious lunch was served by the committee in charge. Unit 2 By Alleve Bradley Unit 2 of the Lucknow UCW met at the home of Mrs. Eldon Bradley on Monday,. November 24 for their December meeting, which was held one week early, with 14 members, three visitors and twoo children present. Miss Helen Thompson presided for the Christmas program, which opened with two Christmas instrumentals played by Mrs. Mary MacGillivray. Following the Call To Worship, the members sang a Christmas hymn. The scripture was read by Mrs. MacGillivray with an inspiring meditation given by Mrs. Peter Cook, followed by prayer. All sang another Christmas carol, and Helen Thompson introduced the guest speaker, Mrs. Margaret Ferguson, whose message was "Looking at Christmas from the Inside". Mrs. Mayme Henderson thanked the speaker and presented: her and Mrs. McFarlane with a gift. Mrs. McFarlane sang an unaccompanied solo. Mrs. Henderson gave two reading and Helen Thompson thanked the hostess and her committee who had helped her with the program. The program closed with a prayer and a carol. Mrs. Button presided for the business, and opened with a Christmas thought.. The rollcall was answered with a verse from the Christmas story. The minutes were read and approved. Mrs. ► i ackett gave the treasurer's report. The offering was taken and, dei imbed, Mary Black reported for the Citizenship Committee and later recited a poem. Helen Thompson reported for the Steward- ship Committee and gave a reading. Following the announcements, the meeting closed with a prayer by Mrs. Button. Rev. McFarlane said the Grace and a social time was enjoyed as the committee served refreshments. Unit 3 Unit 3 of the Lucknow UCW met at the home of Lois Walden with 14 Members and one visitor answering the rollcall on Advent. Lois Walden welcomed all and gave a reading on Advent. The . Devotions were given by Isobel Miller and Mrs. Todd. Hymn 50 was sung followed by another reading by Mrs. Todd. Marion,. Zinn read a poem on Christmas giving. An Indian poem was given by Miss Peggy Gordon. Hymn 51 and prayer ended the devotions. The minutes of the last meet were read and adopted. The treasurer's report was given °and the offering was taken -and dedicated. It was announced that the general meeting will be held on December 2 at 7 p.m. with coffee and dessert. All the reports are to handed in at that time. The closing thoughts were a reading from the Sentinel a few year's back, After . the Mizpah . Benediction and Grace, a Christmas. lunch was served.. Unit By Margaret Thompson Unit 4 of the Lucknow United Church Women met for their Christmas meeting on November, 25 with an attendance. of 21. Mrs. Cam Thompson, assistant unit leader, presided for the business. She opened the 'fleeting with a short poem. Reports weregivers by: Citizenship and Social Action - Mrs. Stuart Collyer; Supply - Mrs. George . McBride; Community Friendship Mrs., Cligg Crawford; Chris- tian Education - Mrs. Jerry Priestap; Amnesty - Miss Norma Weatherhead; Flowers - Mrs. A.J. Wilson ,and Treasurer - Mrs. Ken Cameron. The General Meeting was announced for December 2 and the CGIT Vesper Service for December 7 in the Presbyterian Church. The rollcall was answered with a Chris- tian Thought and a donation,for a Poinset- ta plant for Pinecrest Manor. The business was closed with a Christmas prayer. The program committee for the evening Mrs. Gordon Cayley, Mrs. Don Matthews, Mrs. Bill Graham and Mrs. Jack Treleaven. Mrs. Graham introduced her guest, Mrs. Dick Spear of Turnberry Estates. She rendered two beautiful solos which were accompanied by Mrs. Graham. Mrs. Cayley presided for the devotions and program with the theme, "Waiting". Readers were Mrs. Matthews, Mrs. Graham and Mrs. Cayley, with the group taking part in the Bible study of scripture passages. Mrs. Treleaven gave a paper on the Advent Season, followed by an Advent hymn. Two personal stories, in keeping with the theme, were related by Mrs. Treleaven and Mrs. Matthews. Mrs. Cayley followed with prayer. The meeting closed with the singing of a Christmas song, written by Anita Sparks.
