Rabies eases up this year
More than 157 cases of arraimal rabies
have been reported in :ruce-Grey area this
year compared to 182 at this time last year.
As a result, 51 ruce County residents
have received the anti -rabies vaccine after
coming in contact with a rabid animal, Ir.
W. C. MacPherson, Medical 0 teer of
Health for the :race County Health Unit
said today.
Dr. MacPherson said that, under a
provincial regulation that has been adopted
in the County of Bruce, it is compulsory for
all dogs and cats three months of age and
over to be vaccinated against rabies. The
regulation is intended to protect people
from the disease, he said. Most cases of
human anti -rabies treatments result from
contact with cats and dogs which have been
infected by a rabid wild or domestic
animal.
Although vaccinating domestic animals
is the only barrier between rabies and
people, only 40 per cent of dogs and 15 per
cent of cats• in Ontario are currently
inununized, More than 50• per cent of the
human exposures to the disease occur from
Reader sets peizsio
contact with owned, unimmunized dogs
and cats — often one's own household pets.
Special low-cost clinics will be held and
pet owners will be charged •only $5 per
animal, to a maximum of $25, for the rabies
vaccination. Owners also have the option of
going to their regular veterinarian.
An immunization certificate will be
issued to- the owner, indicating when and
where the animal was vaccinated and when
the vaccination must be repeated. In addi-
tion, a rabies Identification tag will be
provided for each vaccinated dog and cat.
The regulation requires that dogs and cats
be re -vaccinated on a regular basis. Pet
owners who do no comply with the
regulation are subject to &maximum fine of
$5,000.
In the interest of protecting the people in
the community from rabies, the Bruce
County Health Unit urges dog and cat .
owners to meet the regulation by getting
their dogs and cats immunized.
Inquiries regarding this regulation and
the upcoming clinics should be directed to
this health unit.

pensions for Canadians annoys people like
this Mr. X...
How to r pay agreed pensionto retired
people and how. to secure legally for him-
self these ever growing millions from the
fund?
Simple as duck soup,
Mr X„ „ tears in his eyes, announces
that hiscompany hasmerged with a Mr,
Y...'s company and that the surplus money
from his former employees' pension fund is
now tied to other interests, '
Rad Mr. X.,. neglected to contribute
money for every persob working for him,
his former employees would have had a leg
to stand on, but the government is not ,on
the side of the working people. in fact, the
government is on the side of Mr. X..„ The
government allows the practice of with-
drawal of surplus money from employees'
Pension fund. The government says it is for
job creation.
We do read papers here in Lucknow, do
n scenario...
we not? By now, we must know that we all
bad been had in 1066 and that pensioners
are still on the losing sfde,
Am I the only one in the village to
understand how the system works for the
benefit of the filthy rich? You must know
by now bow easy for the rich to get richer
simply by shuffling papers around.
• In the Toronto Star of September 10, I
found the following; "Legislation to be
introduced soon after the Legislature
reconvenes on October 14 WILL NOT
contain inflation protection for pensioners
nor will it forbid companies from withdraw-
. ing surplus funds."
What kind of politicians did we elect in -
Huron -Bruce if they allow the rich to get
richer by appropriating working peoples'
money?
Will they tell me that their dearest desire
,is to represent the average folks?,
Yours truly,
A Joe Legrand
