Anniversary celebrated

Margaret and Francis Gemmell and
Gladys Cameron attended the 45th Wedding
Anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Don Willsie in
the Community Centre in Belmont. Mrs.
Willsie was the former Etta Lane of Ripley
and Don was on the Ripley Royal Bank staff.
Among the many friends and relatives at-
tending the event was Etta's brother Walter
Lane of Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Some
readers will remember Watt Lane as their
classmate starting at the Ripley Continua-
tion School back in September 1923.
The Ripley Women's Institute presented
the trophy for School Spirit at the Ripley
District School Graduation ceremony held
last Wednesday evening June 18 in the
auditorium. This trophy for 1986 was won by
Brian Kelly. Mrs. Minnie Lock presented
the trophy on behalf of the Women's In-
stitute in the absence of the president Mrs.
Zilla Hedley.
Shirley (Mrs. Brian) Dewar of Huron or
Mainstreet South was the distributor of the
1986 Canada Census Forms in Ripley. These
were filled in for Tuesday, June 3 and kept
for her return. In the meantime Shirley had
taken i11.
By Tuesday morning last week she was
able to make the return pick up trip with her
car. We were glad to see her recovered and
also glad for her to have the forms back.
Mark Humphrey, son of Norma and Cecil
Humphrey of Point Clark and a former
Ripley District High School student,
graduated from Fanshawe College, London
on June 19 as an Audio -Visual Technician.
Mark is employed with International Image
Conversions in Toronto.
Prior to attending Fanshawe College he
worked as an Auto Body Mechanic for five
years.
ORLAND McLEOD
Orland McLeod of McGill Street, Ripley,
passed away last Friday, June 20, 1986, in
Kincardine and District Hospital. He was in
his 79th year. Born in Kincardine township
on Thursday, September 19, 1907, his
parents were Murdock McLeod and Mary
Lindsay.
The funeral service was held at 2 p.m,
Sunday June 22, 1986 in the MacKenzie Mc-
Creath Funeral Home in Ripley with Rev.
Hugh Nugent of Knox Presbyterian Church
in Ripley officiating. Interment was in
Ripley Cemetery. Visitation at the funeral
home was on Saturday. Memorial donations
to the Arthritis Society or to the Cancer
Society were appreciated.
Surviving Orland are his wife the former
Sadie Scott, five daughters - Isobel - Mrs.
Keith Carter, Con. 10, Huron Township,
Catherine - Mrs. Ken, Leddy, St. Augustine,
Dorothy Howald, Victoria, B.C., Sharon -
Mrs. Ken Metcalfe, Kitchener, Helen - Mrs.
Dave Meyers, New Hamburg, three sons -
Eugene of Kincardine twp., Donald of Vic-
toria, B.C., John of Red Deer, Alberta, 21
grandchildren and 2 great great grand-
daughters also one sister Mrs. Mildred
Wylds of Ripley and two brothers Wilmer of
Kincardine and Burton of Ripley.
He was predeceased by a sister Jean and
a grandson Brian also his parents Murdock
and Mary McLeod.
Sympathy is extended to all family
members at this time of bereavement.
On Friday afternoon June 20, 1986, a
Retirement Tea was held for Marian
Huston, grade 5 teacher at the Ripley
District School.
Friends, relatives, associates, former and
present students attended the event between
2:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. It was held in the
school gymnasium - auditorium which had
been beautifully decorated by the students
and staff for the occasion. The bulletin
board displayed school pictures spanning
many years of Mrs. Huston's career.

funding, it will be unlikely that community
support will strengthen. "The need isn't so
dire once the building is up," he
commented.
Bitton also questions the judgement of
the board in building a new arena without
including a new arena floor. He said
Paisley built a new arena over a relatively
new arena floor several years ago when
funding for capital projects was plentiful.
This year Paisley spent $120,000 to replace
the arena floor.
At the time the new arena was built, the
ministry would have funded 25 per cent of
the cost of the floor if it had been included
in the project and the difference in cost to
the whole project at the time would have
been peanuts.
Powell River couple visits
Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Gawley of Powell
River, BC, are visiting with their sister
Ethel Gawley and other relatives and Pur-
ple Grove friends for the next few weeks.
The Campbell Picnic was held at the Com-
munity Centre on Saturday.
Mrs. Marjorie Thompson spent the
weekend at the farm with her son Bert
Thompson.
Gladys Arnold and Mr. and Mrs. Don Mc -
Cosh attended their Family (Orr) Reunion
in Conestoga Family Park - Arthur oh
Sunday.
Katherine Collins enjoyed the Carruthers
Family Picnic at the home of Mr. and Mrs.
Lynn Lowry Amberley on Sunday.

guests of Mrs. Marjorie Reid at the cottage,

Several from the Grove were on the Senior
Citizens Mystery Bus Trip on Wednesday.
They had fun on the Via Train ride from
Stratford to Guelph. Mr. and Mrs. Dawson
Pollock were host and hostess on the train.

band Orland. The funeral was held in Ripley
