John C. MacDonald of Ripley is among the
graduates at the University of Western On-
tario, London this week. He will receive a
Master of Science degree in Biochemistry.
He has been employed at St. Joseph's
Hospital in London since 1972 and is in the
Research Lab. Congratulations go to Court-
ney — another Grade 13 graduate of our
foriner Ripley District High School back in
the years when Grade 13 Ontario Depart-
mental Examinations were written in June
and marked in Toronto in July.
Home from British Isles
Joyce Osborne, daughter of Robert and
Muriel Osborne, Concession 4 just east of
the 15th road in Huron Township, recently
returned from a three week trip to Britain.
Following a visit to London and a two week
tour of England, Scotland, and Wales, she
spent a few days visiting her cousin Captain
John McCallum, his wife Denyse Contrasty
and their family. John, who is in England
taking some courses, is with the Canadian
Air Force.
Visiting in Ripley
Visiting with Francis and Margaret Gem-
mell at their home on Tain Street in Ripley
this past week were Bill and Wanda Harris
of London and Dr. and Mrs. Ken Smith and
Whitney of Kitchener. Mrs. Smith is the
former Ann Gemmell, daughter of Francis
and Margaret. On Sunday afternoon Bill
Harris called on Dave and Grace Murray,
Ab Wylds, Katie Irwin and others for brief
visits.
This is postal employees week
Across Canada this is Postal Employees
Week. May it be a special time when we say
thanks for the service they provide for get-
ting the mail around this big country. Here
in Ripley our postmaster Margaret Thomp-
son and her assistants Lois Irwin and Janice
Hodgins are marking it. Herman Lanting of
Kinlough is setting up a display of his
stamps in the Ripley office.
Also keep in mind the bus drivers who
handle the incoming and outgoing mail
bags, the office custodian, and the rural
mail carriers.
Back on bank staff
It is nice to see teller Marilyn Freer back
in the Ripley Royal Bank staff next door
here.
Sorry for wrong spelling
Our apology goes to the two ladieswho,
operate the I.C. Greenhouses on the 5th con-
cession east for a mistake in the one name
as printed in this column last week. It should,
be Corrie — I guess our writing must have
been poor. So for the record once again, I is
for Ida; and C for Corrie.
Ida and Corrie Piel are still welcoming
folks to see their greenhouses with a good
selection of plants. There are boxes of cab-
bage, tomatoes and so on for the vegetable
garden and there are hundreds of flower
plants.
In London hospital
Word was recently received that Elmer
Avery, formerly of the Fourth Concession
west in Huron township, has been a patient
in Western Hospital in Toronto. His father
was the late Sam Avery and the family lived
on the farm where Stan Blackwell now lives.
Elmer suffered serious head injuries in a
fall a couple of weeks ago. Mr. and Mrs.
Elmer Avery were among those returning to
the area for the fall fair each year. Mrs.
Avery is the former Jean Hendry of
Tiverton.
Ashfield anniversary service
The anniversary services at the Ashfield
Presbyterian Church are on Sunday June 22.
The guest speaker is Rev. Robert Shaw. The
regular minister is Rev. Hugh Nugent of
Ripley. The big church was built back in
1906 with that master carpenter - the -late
John Robertson of Ripley in charge.
Back in the summer and fall of 1934 when
Ab Wylds worked on the farms in the
Lochalsh area Murdock Matheson lived on
the farm just north of the church and Roy
MacKay on the other side. Murdock, not to
be confused with the Ripley Murdock on the
8th concession east, operated the Jack
Rhyver Goodison threshing separator for
the Farmers Syndicate at Lochalsh.
Craft show shaping up
Gail vanderHoek says, that preparations
for the Ripley Craft Show sponsored by the
Ripley Agricultural Society for July 18 & 19
are going ahead nicely. Convenor of the
committee in charge is Dianne Gamble.
Gail is looking after the advertising and
listing the entries. On the committee with
Dianne and Gail are Susan Vansickle of the
2nd concession east, Maryann Forster of
Point Clark, and Pat Chatham of the 8th
concession west. Talking to Gail on Monday
morning she says that she still has space in
the Complex for more entries in the show.
