Local shower for bride-to-be
A shower was held last Wednesday even-
ing in Whitechurch community Memorial
Hall for bride-to-be Joanne Pickard by
Mrs. Jim deBoer, Mrs. Hugh Simpson and
Mrs. Carl McClenaghan.
A short program of contests and
household hymns were written out and
given to each present to -read when called
upon. These were collected after being
read and presented to the bride-to-be.
She received some beautiful gifts for
which she thanked the donors and those
giving the shower.
Lunch was served after the program.
On Tuesday Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Moore
of Cobalt and their daughter Sandra and
family Amanda, Sean and Benjamin were
callers on Mr. and Mrs. Victor Emerson
and other friends in the village. Mr. and
Mrs. Ronnie Moore and family live in
Calgary.
Harry Jewitt of Sarnia, who attended SS
'No. 9 Kinloss in his school days, was a
Saturday visitor with Mr. and Mrs. Victor
Emerson.
UCW Meeting
The June meeting of the UCW was held
at the home of Mrs. Fred Liffin on
Wednesday.
Mrs. George Ball opened the meeting
with a Medelation Prayer. All sang a hymn
and Mrs. Ball gave a reading and led in
prayer. Mrs. Pauline Adams read the
scripture Luke 4:16-21. All sang another
hymn and Mrs. Adams led in prayer.
Mrs. Ball gave an interesting history of
the continent of Africa when it was a very
rich continent over 400 years ago. Through
the years, other countries have taken the
mineral and natural resources and today it
is the poorest continent in the world. The'
world has not been a good steward where
Africa is concerned. It has come from
riches to rags.
Mrs. Adams read about the hard times
the farmers of Ontario and Canada are
having.
Mrs. Ball led in prayer. Mrs. Chapman
read the minutes. Nine members
answered the roll call - What we mean by
Stewardship. The collection and Least
Coin was received and the Offertory
prayer was given by Mrs. Ball.
Mrs. Agnes Farrier thanked the hostess
and closed the meeting with prayer. The
birthday tea followed.
People Report
Mr. and Mrs. Russel Chapman travelled
to Markham on Sunday to help her brother
Nelson Smith celebrate his 80th birthday.
Last Monday, Mrs. Bill Gibson held a
plant sale.
On Saturday, Mrs. Agnes Farrier at-
tended the open house at the United
Church to honor Mrs. Audrey Liffin on the
occasion of her retirement. She also at-
tended the open house held in honor of Mr.
and Mrs. Russel McGuire's 40th wedding
anniversary by their family at the
Wingham Golf and Curling Club.
Anniversary Service
The 104 anniversary was held at the
United Church on June 8. For the service,
the choir sang a variety of hymns in-
cluding, Where No One Stands Alone, and
A Little Bit of Love and Kindness. The ser-
mon was entitled Why Not? and was given
by Mr. Neil Anderson. The evening service
consisted of choral selections Blyth United
Church choir with Pastoral and the Lords
Prayer sung in unison.
A film called The Pipal was shown to the
congregation during the service. More
choral selections followed with the Blyth
choir singing the closing Hymn called
Saviour Again to Thy dear Name.
After the evening service all were in-
vited to the basement to express our
thanks to Mr. Neil Anderson of Amulree
and to the Blyth church choir for their
music and to all former members of the
churches and friends for being with the
congregation today.
Word was received that Emerson Morris
had passed away May 21 at Vero Beach
Florida. This is the last relative of the late
Tom Hill and family of Langside. We ex-
tend our sympathy. He leaves to mourn
three girls and a boy. The oldest boy was
killed overseas.
The census girl was along Monday morn-
ing to pick up the completed forms in the
village.
Visitors on Sunday with Mr. and Mrs.
Beecroft were Mr. and Mrs. Robert Sin-
namon and Bradley Bornholm from
Wingham, Ken Sinnamoir, Ronald
Beecroft, Shannon and Heather and
Sharon Worth and Stacey.
On Sunday, Tony Falconer celebrated
his birthday with Mr. and Mrs. Wallace
Milligan, Mr. and Mrs. Alan Falconer,
Tim and Amy. He also celebrated on Mon-
day with Mr. and Mrs. Angris Falconer,
Mr. and Mrs. Alan Falconer, Tim and
Amy, Mrs. Jean Tiffin and Isobel Tiffen.
Mrs. Kathleen Gibson and Mrs. Joan
Fisher of Waterloo motored to Kingston to
visit her sister Mrs. Mary Dawson of
Kingston. They also visited friends on
Howe Island, one of the Thousand Islands.
Mr. and Mrs. Joe Ducharme of Goderich
visited her parents Mr. and Mrs. Elroy
Laidlaw on Sunday.
Mr. and Mrs. Carl McClenaghan on Sun-
day visited with Mr. and Mrs. Mack
Stewart of Guelph.
Congratulations from the village to Mr.,
and Mrs-. Russel McGuire who, on Satur-
day, celebrated their 40th wedding an-
niversary at the Golf Course club.
Mr. and Mrs. John Scheeringa of
Brampton spent the weekend with her
parents Mr. and Mrs. Archie Purdon.
Mr. and Mrs. Ted McClenaghan of Kit-
chener spent the weekend with Miss
Mildred McClenaghan.
On Sunday, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Har-
wood of Ancaster visited with Miss
Mildred McCienghan.
