Mary Worthington of Ripley says thanks
to all the canvassers and donors for the
Canadian Cancer drive .recently concluded.
As the captain she says that the, job was
well done... She made a spmrnary which her
husband `Lloyd delivered here. We thank
them both for this note.
The figures are Ripley $966., Purple
Grove $288., and. the' Ripley and District
Lions Club $100. for .a total of $1354, This
amount exceeds the 1985. total by $145.
Happy Hearts euchre
Mary and John Scott of Queen St. east in
Ripley report the. Happy Hearts Euchre par-
ty as follows -
Eight, tables were played last Monday
afternoon at the Legion Hall, and prize win-
ners were: Myrtle Percy, Ken Pynn, Bertha
Tout, and Marion Gamble. Most lone hands
was won by' Earl Tout.. This was the final.
game of the season.
Fall fair meeting
May 12 atthe start of next week is the se-
cond Monday of this new month and so it will
be the meeting time for the Ripley
Agricultural Society. Presidents Cecil and
Wilma Sutton and secretary Don MacTavish
remind all that at the April meeting of the
society it was agreed that all changes to the
classes in the 'prize list and also all collec-
tions or donations for the fair should be done
for this May meeting.
Ab Wylds has -learned that the annual Spr-
ing Meeting for District 10 of the Ontario
.Agricultural Societies including all fall fairs
in Bruce and; Grey Counties is to be held in
Kincardine on.Wednesday May 28.
Two fires reported
Around eight last Thursday evening May 1
the Ripley fire whistle sounded: Soon the
three red Ripley Fire Department vehicles
were headed north on.the i5th north through
Ripley. The fire engine pumper, the water
tank truck, and the auxiliary van were on
their way to the Huronville section in the
north west corner of:Huron township: •

Ray Fuller, Joe Hodgins, Bill Robinson,
Chris Anger, Danny MacDonald and Don
Peterbaugh. It was a . chimney fire atthe

On Friday evening May 2 about 9 p.m. the
Ripley Fire. Department answered a call to
the Fourth .Concession east in• Huron
Township, two blocks south of Ripley and
one block - east to the farm of John D.
Thompson.
He had been out working on the farm and
when he came into the'house for the evening
he got a fire going/in the stove to warm the
place. While ' watching television later -he
saw burning shingles flying across the field.
They were from the back kitchen roof which
was all on fire and it was' his way of getting
out. There was a brisk wind blowing from
the north west luckily away from the barn
`but right;<on: to;the•main part of the house.
The, house was destroyed.
The firemenleft the scene about 2 a.m.
,and by, the time they got things back in
shape in the-firehall ready: for the next call it
would be.three in the morning...
Out were Chief Cook, Brien,Pollock, Chris
Anger, Bill Robinson, Barry Cliffe, Rod,
MacDonald, Bernie 'Nolen, Doug'Nartyn,;
Bob. Johnston, Jack Scott, Ray Puller, and
Don Peterbaugh,

Saw Mallard, ducks - .
`Joe KTunder who,lives atthe intersection
of the 15th;..(Bruce County Road 7) and
Highway 9 called last Wednesday evening to
pay that he -had observed the Mallard ducks,
mentioned •in the news column that day.
.April 30. they ,were still in the Bill Johnson
corn stubble . field on' Saturday and not
bothered by the passing traffic along the two
roads. They had landed there at noon on
Friday':.
Went into hospital,
Bob Love of Malcolm Street was admitted
to University Hospital in London last Friday
May 2 for tests. Ripley folks Wish Bob well,
Mrs. Mary Fludder - droverh m to London
and returned home that evening.
