[Man Rivett photo] Library alive with sounds By Alan Rivett • The Lucknow Library was alive with the sounds of enthusiastic children, clapping, dancing and singing to the music of an up-and-coming children's entertainer on May 3. Deborah Dunleavy, a Toronto native, presented the music from her latest children's album Jibbery Ave to approxi- mately 40 parents and children at the Libraiy. Since the album came out in November of 1984, Ms. Dunleavy has been giving, an average of 80 concerts every three months. She has also given concerts in Clinton, Goderich and Walkerton. A former teacher, and country and blues musician' and composer, Ms. Dunleavy has been performing. for children, since 1972. She says ;she chose to pursue children's Performing because it incorporated both OaChing and music. She also found teach- ing to be "creatively stifling". which prompted her shift into children's music. The basis of her show, she sags, is the use of children's rhymes and rhythms in a contemporary context. All the while, the children are encouraged to participate by singing and dancing to the songs. She has found children's entertainment in Canada in the areas of dance, theatre AT THE and literature to be setting standards south of the border. She says in the United States, performers such as Raft and. Helen, Lois and Bram are accorded the status of "pop stars for kids". "Children's culture in Canada' is very lively. It's not Disney and it's not the Smurfs, but it's real people working with children in a fairly intelligent way," said Ms. Dunleavy. Next on her agenda is the release of a video this year for children. She expects it to be available for Christmas. She also plans to release a Christmas album called Tick Tock Rock this year. Eventually, she hopes to be bringing her children's shows to larger venues and will perform in Detroit in the near future. She credits agencies such as the Ontario Arts Council and Outreach Ontario for providing money to bring performers to small towns, otherwise the arts would have a difficult time surviving in the smaller. centres. 3/4% 3 YEAR G.I.C.
