Learnabout Christmas in Asia,
9-thliand, Mexico
In Asia there are a few Christians
so the celebrations of Christmas are
a religious festival that is not
widespread. The people go around
singing Christmas carols, and per-
forming Christmas plays.
The Philippines have a long and
lively season. It: lasts about 22 days,
from December 16 to January 6.
Houses are decorated with paper
stars. In each house, one or two
people stay home and serve visitors
who come over.
The Armenians have their
Christmas on January 6. They
believe that the Virgin Mary ate
spinach when Jesus was born.
Because of this they cat spinach on
Chrisunas Day.

In the Netherlands they believe
that Saint Nicholas would come and
give children presents on the 5th of
December. Wearing a red robe, he
arrives on a boat from Spain.
Riding on a white horse down the
streets with his servant Black Peter.
He goes down chimneys and leaves
gifts for the children. He leaves
goodiep in their wooden shoes. On
Dec. 6th they open their gifts. It
sounds like fun.

Christmas, friends, neighbors .and
family gather together to act out the
journey of Mary and Joseph to
Bethlehem. "Posadas" arc what
these nine ceremonies are called.
After the posadas, each night the
children play the game' "pinata".
Pinatas arcj containers made out of
earthenware or paper-mache. Most
pinatas are shaped like animals./

The pinata is hung above the
childrens heads and are filled with
candy, fruit and toys. The children
then take a suck and try to hit the
pinata while blindfolded. When hit
hard enough, the pinata will break
and out of it will come the candy,
fruit and toys. The children then
scramble around to get, the pinatas
treasures.
On the twelfth night, twelve days
after Christmas, the children's
parents fill their children's shoes
with presents.

When the tirst star enters the sky
the polish people stop what they arc
doing to gather around the table to
honor the Holy Child. Before the
traditional supper is served, the
father breaks the Oplatcki, or
Christmas wafcrs.
The meal that follows. has 12
courses. It is always meatless. It
consists of borscht, fish, cabbage;
mushrooms, almonds, and pastries
made with poppy seeds.
In honor of birds and boasts who
gathered around the manger the
children dress upas animals as seen
in the Nativity scene.
Some families send Oplatcki,
unleavened ' bread stamped with a
religious scene, in the mail -to their
families in other parts of the, world.
Polish families, like many other
European people do many of the
same things.
Christmas Eve is a day of fasting:
At Midnight the party begins. Food
is abundant, everyone eats. After
the feast, presents are opened.
When St. Nicholas appear he is
dressed as a bishop.
. As in Canada, Polish people get
really involved in the Christmas
traditions. Steve Spanswick and
