Keeping the Main 2 ing' the
`.Main Thing' at Christmas
Stuffing the bint
Rebecca was putting the lights on
the Christmas tree. Bill was
decorating it. Mother was in the
kitchen cleaning the turkey and
.making the stuffing.
"We're done," shouted Bill, as he
hung the last decoration on the tree.
Mother was putting the stuffing in
the turkey. It was made from bread,
onions and spices. Once that was
done, she put it in the oven and
shut the door. Joni Miltenburg, St.
Joseph's, Kingsbridge. •
One day a family was getting
read for Christmas. The kids were
decorating the tree and helping
mom cook the turkey.
First they washed the turkey.
Then they made stuffing for the
turkey. They used bread, onions and.
secret spices. The !turkey and the
stuffing was very good. Colleen
Caesar, St. Joseph's, Kingsbridge.
Do you know ' how to stuff a
turkey? Some people do and some
people don't.
Well this is how it's done, First
you have to buy a turkey and stuf-
fing. Then you have .o open the
wings of the turkey and take out the
bag that's in it. Put the stuffing in
the turkey: It might be really.gross,
but that is how you stuff a turkey!
Melissa Collins, St.. •Joseph's,
Kingsbridge.

First you buy a turkey. Buy it just
the size you want. Then you bring
it home and thaw it for awhile.
Make some bread crumbs for stuf-
fing with spices mixed in. You stuff
the turkey next, then put it in the
oven. Bring it out in a while, then
start to eat. Laura Doherty, St.
Joseph's, Kingsbridge.
First we buy the turkey. Then we
let it thaw. When it is thawed we
get bread crumbs, vegetables, butter
and spices. Then we stuff the
turkey and cook for five or six
hours. Then we cat it. Zach Vanden
Brock, St. Joseph's, Kingsbridge.
First we cut off its head. Then we
pull all the feathers. Then we clean
the turkey. We make stuffing for it.
We put the stuffing in the turkey.
We put the turkey in the oven and
cat it. Mark Van Osch, St. Joseph's,
Kingsbridge,
One day after school my dad
brought home a turkey.. My mom
and dad had to go away that night
so we got Katie Dalton to babysit.
Dad said we could stuff the turkey
later. Finally mom and dad -left. We
opened the turkey. ' Katie did not
know how to stuff a turkey. So she
just put in this and than. When she
put her hand in, she lost her watch.
She had to put her whole head in
but her head got stock! My sisters
and 1, had to pull it off. The next
day we were eating the turkey.
What a crazy Christmas. Abby
Simpson, St. Joseph's, Kingsbridge.
First we 'go to the supermarket
and buy a turkey. We take it home
and put it in the refrigerator until a
little while before our Christmas
party. Before it's cooked the turkey
looks either pink and white or light
brown. Our moms stuff the .turkey
and pnt it in the, oven and cook it
for quite a long time. After the
turkey is cooled, we help set the
table and is dinner' is served. The
turkey arrives at the table cut up.
Then we cat.

Over the past few weeks I have been reading a book• by
Stephen R. Covey entitled, First Things First. Because this
Is a book on management and because management Is one
of my weak points, it has been slow going at times. Even
that has Its blessing! One of the section -headings has made
a• home In my mind. Covey writes, "The Main Thing Is to
keep the Main Thing the Main Thing."
As we approach our Christmas celebration these are good
words to take with us. These words are important to
remember as we incasingly feel the tug of "the urgent."
There Is the shoppi, g that still needs tobe completed.
Special Christmas cakes and cookies demand a baking,
especially if It Is our turn to 'host the relatives. Last minute
card sending and letter writing add to our busyness. Then
too, we have the parties and the get-togethers and the
special services. All of it is part of the Christmas celebration.
All of It Is significant. And we want to somehow make room
for everything, and everyone.
But then I hear Stephen Covey's words: "The Main Thing
Is to keep the Main Thing the Main Thing." And I begin to
wonder. To use a Biblical phrase, I ponder these things in
my heart. What is the "Main Thing" in Christmas? How can
we keep the Maln Thing the Main Thing?
Without sounding simplistic, it seems to me that to rightly
name our celebration Is to take a giant step in answering our
questions. Christmas is about, Christ. He's the centre. He's
the theme. Our giving and baking and partying will find the
fullest meaning only In Him. To look again at the Christmas
cards we've received, and to listen once more to the carols
:we sing, is to confirm that'truth.
Christmas, 1994 presents us with a birth announcement;
"the Christ is born!" And it's not enough to simply go for a
visit. It's not enough to run out to Zellers and pick up an
appropriate baby gift. Because this child has been born to
us. He's come into our families and into our homes and into
our hearts. Every parent. knows the demands involved.
Schedules adapt. Lifestyles change. We make the necessary
space. And there Is difficulty, but also much delight!
What .is the "Main Thing?" Not the birth announcement.
Not the gifts being given. Not the decorating or the
celebrating. The child Is centre. To make :►pace for the child
is of supreme importance. ,After all, this baby is given the
name "Jesus" because he will save his people from their
sins. This baby is called "Immanuel," God with us. That's
the glorious surprise and the terrible mystery of Christmas.
What's more, this Jesus Christ •Is no longer a baby. He has
grown up and has lived and died and risen again, victorious
over death. • Maybe that explains why our making space for
Him does not result in a more rushed or hurried life, but
rather gives us much needed rest and refreshment.
