Great turkey
recipes for '94
One day I went to the store and I
got a turkey. I took it home. I put
garlic bread, cheese and butter in it.
I put it in the oven at 100 degrees
for an hour. I took it out and cut it
up. I called everyone and served it
to them. Cal McDonagh, Gr. 3,

When I get a turkey from the
store I would chop its head off.
Then I would cut the turkey. Then
I would put in the stuffing. Then I
would put spices, bread and garlic.
I would put it in a circle pan and
put it in the oven at 100 degrees
and cook it for four hours. Then I
would serve it to my family. Joel
Eadie, Gr. 3, LCPS
• Preparing the goose
The day before Chrisunas I will
shop for a goose. I'll take it home
and start working on it. First I will
cut off his head and legs. Then it's
time to make the stuffing. I'll rip
the bread and put it in a bowl. Add
the garlic, spice, salt and pepper
and mix it all up. Then I'll cut the
goose open and put the stuffing in.
Mom will help me pin it up and put
it in a tray. Then we'll put it in the
oven for an hour at 400 degrees. 1
can hardly wait until it's done.

Can you avoid these questions?
For two years Ih a row now, I have presented a challenge to
my three congregations, and to myself. Perhaps you will be
willing to give •a try.
Do you think you could manage to avoid asking children
two questions?
1."What do you want for Christmas? (Variation: "What do
you want Santa to bring you?")
2."What did you get for Christmas? (Variation: "What did
Santa bring you?")
If you can do this you will be doing better than I am! •For I
tried to avoid ,these questions last year and did not manage
to do It! Shortly after I delivered this challenge I asked a
little girl after church, "What did you get for Christmas?"
The words came out before I realized what I had said! 1 could
not help but laugh at myself. Why don't I practise what I
preach?
Perhaps you do not think there is anything wrong with
asking either of these questions. In one sense, you are quite
correct. They are questions any nice person might use to
relate to a child in December. And that is always a good
thing to do at anytime.
Yet in another sense, there is something wrong with these
questions. They send the very quiet but strong message that
the proper focus of Christmas is asking for and receiving
presents. This message is reinforced by the fact that
children are asked these questions over and over again by
many adults. The children of course Imitate their elders and
ask this of each other, many times. .
Now I am sure that we do not mean to send this crassly
materialistic message to children. Most people who ask
"What did Santa bring you?" also happen to believe In the
true meaning of Christmas. Most people know Christmas Is
about . the coming of God to our world as a baby in
Bethlehem. I certainly believe that, yet 1 have asked both
these questions of children many times. Not until last year
did I recognize that a deep-rooted materialism lay at their.
heart (and therefore in my own heart).
In one sense avoiding these questions will not change
much. 'Christmas will still continue to be celebrated the way
it has been for the past 20 years or so. The real change
however will take place in our hearts. The seed of resistance
to the commercialism of Christmaswill be watered and
nurtured. And a few more children will be spared the
message that the focus of Christmas is presents. A small
thing perhaps, but its a start. -

It's about Laughing and singing
At my house we have the
DcRuiter Christmas. All the parents
talk and laugh and all the little kids
play with toys. All the big kids play
cards and play other games or go
outside. Then everyone is called in,
and someone reads the Chrisunas
stdry: Thcn we sing some
Christmas carols. After that we
have something to eat. Thcn
everybody begins to leave to go
back to their homes. '
We also have a family Christmas
just my dad and mom, my sisters
and I. We sit around the Christmas
tree and open presents. Then my
dad reads the Christmas story. Thcn
we sing Christmas songs. I play the
piano for some: of the songs. Merry.
Christmas.
