The Lucknow Sentinel, 1994-12-21, Page 5Elected officials need vision Dear editor: Just when I sat down to write a letter of encouragement to the newly elected members of the municipal government I was hit with the news that the Bruce Coun- ty Council recommended a $15,000 cut to the tourist association. We are sitting on a gold mine, our area of Huron -Grey -Bruce, the potentials are enormous. With the developments of the barren railroad beds, the marvelous water ways, the lakes, recreation areas, historic sites; fresh air, natures beauty, quiet country living and friendly at- mosphere, we could provide a T0 THE EDITOR paradise lor those wllo want to relax. The cost of improving on what we already have is neglec- table. The $15,000 is peanuts in comparison to what we could reap, but we need every dollar to get it going. We need to improve access but above all, we need 'vision and the guts to go ahead. • When we came to Bluevale 1 was looking at a weed infested piece of swampy land. 1 would liketo invite you to come and see the 2000 tulips and other 2000 plants, flowers and shrubs that adorn this jewel of nature this coming spring. In spite of the nearby ballpark and two play grounds, we encountered only one incident of vandalism in five years. My cost was only $200 a year including digging two ponds with fish and water lilies. 1 strongly urge our municipal representatives to enlarge on my small efforts by creating something that could surpass Buchan' Gar- dens, created out of a simple rock quarry. Adrian Kect. Huron chapter applauds Bill 119 Dear editor: The Huron Chapter of the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario firmly supports Bill 119, newly proclaimed legislation which, among other things, limits and in some case prohibits, access to tobacco to young people. The facts concerning smoking and young people are quite shocking. One out of every six teenagers smokes. Becausethey smoke, one out bf every five of these smokers will die before they reach seventy. Smoking will kill eight times more teens than drugs, car accidents, suicide, murder and AIDS com- bined. Recent research demonstrates that tobacco smoke isparticularly dangerous to children and pets. Second-hand smoke - smoke that is inhaled by non-smokers - contains more carbon monoxide and other dangerous chemicals than the Grierson's method influenced film makers rHIE CRS Fi)UNIlAr10.N HERITAGE •from page 4 and American cinemas. By 1945 the NFB had grown into one of the world's largest film studios. Grier - son's documentarymethod influenced filmmakers all over the - world. For. Grierson, a documentary was much more than a simple mirror of everyday life: It was "a weapon in our hands to see and say what is good and right and beautiful." He described filth as "something magical -- an art which can convey a sense of beauty about the ordinary world." ' As the war came to a close, Grierson grew weary of dealing. with government'officials. King was suspicious of Grierson and he was even questioned as a spy,. He left Canada and was almost forgotten. He returned to his native Scotland where he worked in television. In 1968 he came to McGill University in Montreal where' he lectured to fascinated students. He died in England in 1972. • Grierson was a firebrand whose single-minded devotion to the prin- ciple that "all things are beautiful, as long as you have them in ,the right order" had a sarong influence on the history, of film, and on the cultural life of Canada in particular. The NFB has been one of Canada's most important institutions. It has received many international awards, including several Academy Awards, and has trained many of Canada's best film directors.' platt ;s° NO GST pRpou N0 PST ENTIRE SELECTION OF • 1st QUALITY CARPETS • FURNITURE • AREA RUGS • NO WAX VINYL FLOORS • HARDWOOD FLOORS • CERAMIC TILES AND HUNDREDS OF ROLL ENDS_ IJR.EYFAIR furniture & Carpet Ltd. Too much salt spoils stuffing. "Amy; tomorrow is Christmas Eve. You are to stuff the turkey," said Mom. "Oh mom! Why can't you do it?" replied Amy. "I am stuffing the goose," said Mom. The next day Amy began to stuff the turkey. Mom said, "Amy add some salt to the dressing. Amy put a cup full of salt in the dressing.' Then she put the dressing inside the turkey. Mom helped her put the turkey in the oven. After they came home from mid- night mass, the family sat down to have a feast. Dad started to eat some dressing. "This has too much salt.'.' He'gave the rest of the dres- sing to Benj. Benj drank water all night. The next time, Mom made the dressing. Elizabeth Foran, St. Joseph's, Kingsbridge.
