learn about those changes and still
be 'expected to deliver the quality
education that the board demands.
Combined with staff cuts due to
social contract and expenditure
control, Wolfe said teachers are
having a hard time giving the "150
per cern effort" they • have
contributed in the past,
"What is it you don't want done
in the future that we're doing
now?" he asked trustees in a
bluntly -stated presentation to the
board.
•A coinmittee of teachers, ad-
ministration, parent and student
representation looked at three op-
tions for taking the Rac, days. One
option was to take a two week long
March break, while another would
have used existing PD days as Rac
days with no change to the March
break. Wolfe rejected the two-week
March break, because removing that
option means "one Tess hassle for
(teachers) who will be accused of.
wanting to have a two week holiday
to go south."
"It isn't the case. We .are losing
four days pay," Wolfe said, adding
that the doubled March break could
be an option next year, as long as
the extra days arc made up of both
classroom time and professional
development time. "1 do not want to
lose more,professional development
days," Wolfe stated firmly.
It would take Ministry. of
Education approval io cut the num
ber of classroom days to. accom-
modate Rac days.
Trustee Frank Eagleson supported
the two-week March break, saying
the large chunk of time would give
recreation departments time to put
on programs and could even be .a
bonus for merchants.
The option of using existing PD
days as Rae days was rejected,
because "staff morale will suffer
due to perteived lack of consul-
tation", according to a report
reviewed by trustees.
That option would have been the
closest match to a schedule of PD
days already established with the
neighboring boards, who share
busing with the Bruce board on
some routes. Those boards do not
need. Rae days, a fact that raised
questions from new trustee Dennis
, Posthumous.
' Asking why those boards don't
need the unpaid leave days, Pos-
thumous was told they have more
teacher and administrative
retirements to cover the • social
contract target cuts. Teachers for
'the. Bruce board opted to protect
salary increases for young teachers,
but to do that all teachers have to
take Rac days and teaching staff in
.the Bruce board will have a few
more job losses then would have
otherwise been necessary under the
soc4 i1 contract.
Stobo said laying 'off .ad-
ministration was not an option for
the Bruce board, "That's all right
for smaller boards, but there would
be a severe cost 1'or us to do that,"
he said.,

()PEN DATES
Members of the Auxiliary to
Wingham and District were given
the opportunity at their November
meeting to learn more about
improving communication, which is
the main job of a speech
pathologist.
Speech pathologist Janc Tolton
joined the staff of Wingham and
District Hospital. in- May of 1993.
Ms. Tolton has a case load consis-
ting mostly of preschool children.
Referrals are made through a doctor
and patients are placed on a waiting
list. Parents also sit in on sessions
with their child which arc an 'hour
long and on a one-to-one basis. The
parent can then help their child at
home. Some of the problems might
involve teaching speech skills,
stuttering, swallowing difficulties,
the hearing impaired and for adults
communication problems through a
stroke or accident.
