Four PD days designated
as 'Rae Days' in Bruce
With the start of Christmas
holidays looming fast, the Bruce
County Board of Education has
finally agreed on how to squeeze in
the Rae day it needs before the end
of this school year to meet social
contract targets for its teaching
staff.
One day will be added to each
end of the March Break, which will
now be Friday,. March 10 to Mon-
day, March 20 inclusive. Two more
days will be taken February 3 and
June 29, with school getting out for
students on June 23 instead of the
previously .scheduled June 22.
The schedule agreed to last week
means teachers will see four of
their nine professional development
days cancelled and reclassified as
unpaid leave days. Last year, Bruce
County teachers lost two profes-
sional development days to Rae
days. Teachers' president Barry
Wolfe fears that if the trend con-
tinues, there. could be six unpaid
leave days and only three days for
professional • development in the
1995-96 school year.
The loss of professional develop-
ment days is the biggest concern for
teachers' representatives and ad=
istrati an, trustees learned. Wolfe
said with all the curriculum changes
facing-' both the elementary and •
secondary levels, teachers can't
afford to miss out on the chance to

example of her involvement in
preparing teachers for the junior
kindergarten pilot project, Yenssen
said teachers and parents alike are
grateful for• support and indication
that the board knows what they are
facing in the classrooms.
Yenssen also reminded trustees of
advise given three years ago by
trustee Frank Eagleson.
"He said we are elected in an
area, but now we have to represent
the needs of each student in the
whole county," Yenssen said. '
Taking ..their seats around• the
board table for the first time Tues-
day were five new trustees. They
are Carolyn Day, who takes over

by Ray Fenton; Ruth Hirtenfeld of

township. Don Cass Of the Ripley
area, and Dennis Posthumous of the
Arran -Tara area: Also sworn in as a
trustee was Lester Anoquot
'representing' the Saugeen First
Nations. Another trustee represen-
ting/the Chippewas of Nawash First
Nation is expected to be named in
the new year.
While men outnumbered women
111 to four on the old• board, the
gender split is almost equal this
term. Seated around the table are
eight 'mal'e and a record seven
female trustees.
