Learning tricks of trade
by Jon Hallam
., This year I was given the oppor-
tunity to work for Montgomery
Motors, in Lucknow. Every other
day 1 work the afternoons at
Montgomery's through the co-
operative education program.
Each student enrolled in the co-op
program is allowed to choose an
area they are most interested in. I
am a Grade 12 student involved in
he automotive courses, so naturally
I chose the field of auto mechanics.
After only a few weeks at
Montgomery's, 1 have learned a lot
about newer vehicles and many
'tricks of the trade' that. -I did not
know from my own experiences or
from my auto mechanics classes at
school.
I enjoy working with all the other
mechanics. I have learned how to
be safe while I am working with
them.
Among • the tasks I have per-
formed are changing universal
joints, belts, tires and performing
tune-ups. However, most of the
time, 1 help the other mechanics do
' jobs that require two people to
complete. •
By the end of the year, I hope to
have a better understanding of fuel
injection systems;' and many other
computer systems that make
vehicles safer and more efficient.
I knew that this would be a very
rewarding experience and so far I
have not been disappointed, and I
don't suspect I will be either.
I highly recommend the 'co-
operative education program. It
gives a person, the 'hands-on' ex-
perience that they cannot get from
the classroom and gets you oriented
with the work force.
