Gretzky dodges criticism over tour
by Jim Hughson
Given his track record you might
think we'd know better than to
doubt Wayne Gretzky, but ap-
parently that's not the case. His
tour of Europe dodged a barrage of
criticism and several attempts to
scuttle yet sailed smoothly over the
Atlantic and began the way his
hockey ventures usually do, with a
win.
And after a 7 - 1 thrashing of
Finland's best club team, he was
smiling, as though there. had never
been any doubt. There probably
hadn't.
If ever there's a movie about
Gretzky, it's too bad he can't be
played by Errol Flynn.
From the day' he entered the
National Hockey League, Gretzky
has been proving people wrong. His
detractors said he was too small to
withstand the torturous pace. When
Gretzky had won a couple of
scoring championships, Bryan Trot -
tier was said to be a more complete
player. Later he was seen as a
whiner to referees and a
manipulator of management.
Through it all he's won Cups and
scoring championships like no one
else .has.
Yet even though he's the person
most responsible for the NHL's
recent rise to prominence in the
United States, Gretzky met con-
siderable resistance launching his
locked out tour of Finland, Norway
and. Sweden.
The league put heat on sponsors
and broadcasters not to take part in
the event. Some players, not on the
team of course, questioned its com-
position and motives.
"Everybody's trying to sabotage
the tour," said 99 as he prepared to
leave for Helsinki. "But they're all
taking this tour the wrong way.
We're just trying to play hockey
but we're going to go back to the
NHL some day and these same
people are going to be asking for
favors and they're not going to
understand- when they don't get
them."
The CBC agreed to televise two
games but couldn't use the Hockey
Night in` Canada identity. Others
wouldn't touch the tour, according
to Gretzky. "1 guess people aren't
tired of watching bowling and pool
yet."
When the team turned up in
Detroit, three Red Wing players
didn't dress, respecting the wishes
of their team's owner, Mike Illitch.
The Philadelphia Flyers wouldn't
let two of their farmhands play
against the All -Stars in an effort to
belittle the game.
Playing with only four defen-
cemen and 10 forwards, the
Gretzkys lost 4 - 3 to Detroit
Vipers of the international Hockey
League and looked so out of shape

that candidate," said Johns inher.
address to delegates.
"A candidate must have more
than a grasp of the issues. We need
a strong candidate who can win in
Huron County," she said, pledging
to travel• throughout the riding in
an effort to win voter support for
the party.
Johns stressed her youth and

business experience as key assets
she offered as a candidate.
"Half of the people who will vote
in this election are 45 and under.
They may not be concerned about
the same issues that are affecting
you here in this room," she told the
gathering estimated at between 500
and 600 (including just under 400
delegates)..
"I'm 41 -years -old and I can relate
1.0 these people," said Johns,
adding that she can also relate to
the concerns of seniors.
Johns said she intends to initiate
polling of riding voters, "so we can
find the large swing vote that voted
NDP last tune."
During her acceptance speech,
Johns asked the other candidates to
join her on the stage and spoke
glowingly about their contributions
to the Tory cause.
"As you can tell, 1 respect each of
these men and will take what •
they've. taught me into the dee-
tion," she said.
ogressive initiatives
While' Klopp accepted his
• nomination, he reflected on his past
four years in office and spoke of
some of the things the NDPs have
done for Huron County and the
province. •
"Standing here tonight I feel
proud of the progressive initiatives
this government has done," said
Klopp. He noted the success of the
Blyth Festival as an example. He
said that through jobsOntario, the
Festival has created a plan where
they will no longer have to depend
on government assistance.
Klopp, a lifelong resident of
Huron County and farmer near
Zurich,. has been involved with the
NDPs since the late 1970s. Prior to
being elected as the Huron MPP in
1990, he was a municipal councillor
for Hay Township. Presently as
MPP he is the Parliamentary Assis-
tant to Ontario's Minister of
Agriculture, Food and Rural. Affairs
and was chair of the Rural Ad-
'visory Committee.,
"I am also very proud of the
headway we have made in rural
community development."
Through rural community
development, Klopp said that "for
the first time in history, rural com-
munities have had the opportunity
to shape their own destinies." He
also noted that programs such as
Farm Plus are putting jobs and.
wealth back into the community.
