The Huron New Democratic , Provincial Riding Association met ' at the Clinton, Town Hall on Thursday night to choose their candidate for the next ,election. Incumbent Klopp was the only one, nominated at the meeting to represent the Huron NDPs. Paul Ross stepped forward and made his nomination of Klopp. "The thing I've always respected about Paul...his feeling of the wel- fare of the people. The other reason is his belief in the in- dividual...standing up for the in- dividual. People like you, people like • me who are just everyday ordinary folk," said Ross. . Another thing that Ross said he admired about Klopp's character as a leader was his determination to fight for an idea and to stick with it. "He's like a terrier...He grabs Onto' an idea and the more you kick to get him off, the stronger he grabs onto it until he does whatever he can to achieve the thing that he believes in passionately." •see Proud, page 7 Johns gets Huron PC nod by Patrick Raftis Huron Tories will attempt to ride a dark horse to victory in the upcoming provincial election. Political neophyte Helen Johns bested 'four other candidates, all with either extensive experience in municipal politics or long histories of activity in the Progressive Conservative party (or both) at a nomination meeting, November 30 in Exeter. Although it required four ballots to decide the winner, Johns led from the first ballot to the last, after captivating delegates with an upbeat candidacy speech which focussed on the task of winning the riding in the upcoming election. By contrast, all four of Johns' opponents (Lawrence Beane, Tom Tomes, John Schenk. and Howard Armstrong) concentrated on how an elected Tory party would gov- ern, basically offering formulistic interpretations of PC leader Mike Harris' Common Sense Revolution platform. Meanwhile, an incident that closed the Formosa school for a day last September because of fumes from maintenance work being done in the gym has prompted the board to review its policy. The existing policy says that such work 'should be done in summer or on the longer Christmas and March breaks if possible. Weekend work is the last choice, and if emergency work during the week results in fumes the school is to stay closed. Added to that policy is a provision allowing principals to moldy parents through a newsletter of major work projects that could lead to unacceptable fumes, and giving parents the decision whether or not to keep their children home. Business superintendent Paul Serre said the expanded policy is part of the board's "on-going" effort .to maintain air quality that is "as pure as possible". But he ad- mitted it is still a judgement call by the principal as to the size and nature of work that may produce fumes. 7. 77 - ---, cam+=71 Lucknow Sentinel, dnesaay, December 771994 - Page 5 Bell's DISCOUNT CENTRE LUCKNOW Christmas Shopping Party Invitation Present this card & receive 7-8- 15% 0 8-9-20%.FF 9-1.0-25% • Our entire selection of goods (except Tobacco Products) Date Dec. 7, .1994from 7 to 10 PM TIE INTO SAVINGS 16642V1122 and page* -ALLi)fl%. 01; OFF #0H44 MEN'S WEAR Downtown Walkerton 881-2165 r SHOP WALKERTON IIN$ioO.» y Shopping in Walkerton Fill out a ballot at any store in Walkerton and enter the draw to win $100.00 in Candy Cane Coupons.
