Veteran trustee elected
as chair of BGSSB
by Pat Halpin
Veteran trustee Tom O'Dwyer has been elected chair of the Bruce -
Grey Separate School Board, edging out former vice -chair Marie Zettel
in a two-way race for the post.
Helen Waechter, Ken Waechter and Christine O'Hagan-Zettel were
also nominated for chair, but declined to run.
O'Dwyer is beginning his 26th year as a tnlstee, having served on
both the Bruce -Grey and the Duffenn separate boards. The retired sheep
fanner was born in, Dublin, Ireland. He-, now lives in Dornoch and
represents eastern Grey county.
O'Dwyer said he intends to continue work with the Grey and Bruce
County boards on anti -violence issues. He described violence as an
issue that has serious implications for the school'system, and vowed to
do his best to prevent violence from occurring in the schools.
He has also worked with Grey county council on its waste manage-
ment study, and predicted there will be more cooperative efforts
involving the school boards and county councils as they tackle
community problems.
"I think our municipal governments, as well as our school boards,
have to get together and take a real serious look at what's going on in
our communities with the your people. I think these are my priorities,"
O'Dwyer said in an interview.
Elected vice -chair was Ken Wacchter, a Brant township farmer with
19. years experience on the board including three years as chair.
Waechter handed former vice -chair Marie Zettel her second defeat of
the evening when he won the balloting for vice -chair. Also nominated,
but declining to run, were Suc Potvin, Helen Waechter and Christine
O'1 -lagan Zettel.
Four trustee took theirscats atthe inaugural meeting, and
for the
first time in history the board has more female than male trustees by a
count of eight to six. Kathy York represents Port Elgin and Saugeen
township, Christine Zettel- represents Walkerton, Bill Goetz represents
Mildmay and Carrick, and Gary Fischer represents the Greenock and
Ripley areas. At its last meeting, the previous board recognized the
retirement of trustees with an accumulated 59 years of experience.' as
Pero Luksic, elf Kieffer, Earl Weber and Len Kelly left the board.
BGSSB is investigating
ecological control
weed
Separate , school properties in
Mildmay could be the test sites for
a new non -chemical weed control
program by the separate school
board.
The board is investigating
ecological •weed control after
receiving complaints from some
parents about the chemical "weed
and feed" additives it currently
applies to playgrounds. A
preliminary report indicates that the
board could use aerating, over -
seeding, or planting of clover or rye
grass instead of chemical weed
killers.
Trustees Christine Zettel, who is
working on the project, said it could
be two or three years until results
are ready, to be assessed, because of
the length of time the soil takes to
recover from use of chemical ad-
ditives. She also said the school
yards will look different during the
transition, but emphasized that the
board is not going to neglect the
properties.
"We aren'tgoing to let it look
unsightly. We're still going to mow
the lawn. We're not just going to
let it • go for two years and de
nothing," she said. "It's just a dif-
ferent kind of control. It may react
in a way, like you may have a lot'
of dandelions the first year, or even
the second, that you don't want to
