The coach answers questions in the beer garden after every game while„ on the ice, his team is blazing a trail towards a possible third national championship in four years. They're the Kamloops Blazers and you had better know somebody if you want'to see them play. So popular is this junior team in the heart of British Columbia that 4,600 of the 5,000 scats in its coliseum belong to season -ticket. holders and the eight game Memorial Cup tournament, to be played there next May, is already sold out. And there's good reason for the loyal following. The Blazers have been to the Western League final six times since 1981 and they've won four titles. They're a blue collar team, in a blue collar town and people are pleased to get dressed up to watch them play. The love affair hasn't always been so hot, Junior hockey disap- peared from Kamloops from 1977 through '81 and even after it came back, the fans didn't. But as the win total grew, so did the crowds and the people began to. feel it, was really their team. "The city didn't care .about the team,", recalls Bob Brown, who became GM eight years ago. "We got'the guys who weren't going to school out in the community every day meeting kids and business people and after a while, everybody knew the players and got very involved." They still get . involved after the game at the traditional coach's interview in the lounge. A hot stove league with audience participation. "We used to do' it `cause we had to sell the beer to make a go of it here," chuckles Don Hay, who will double as coach of the national junior team this year. "Now we just do it 'cause we always have." It tickles the imagination, doesn't it, to think of Pat Burns or Mike Keenan facing a mob full of beer and opinions after a tough k;• Like drawing fans, recruiuu,, t*s become much easier with 'cham- pionships but the Blazers still went off the board for their captain and leader, Darcy Tucker. He was a 14 - year -old filling the nets of Endiang, Alta., when the scouts were split over his potential. They sent a video tape to Brown, who liked all the goals he saw and thought he could smooth the rough edges, Now Tucker is 19, filling the net for Kamloops and, if they ever play again, he'll likely be doing it for the Montreal Canadicns sometime, too. The Blazers on the Memorial Cup .in 1992 and then again last spring. As the host team, they get an automatic berth in the next championship but there's a good chance they won't need it although coach Hay plays down the junior juggernaut theory. "We still have rcy.im for improvement," he tries to convince, borrowing a line from the text of Coaching 101. It's hard to imagine junior hockey in Kamloops getting much better but if thereare improvements to be made, the coach will likely 'hear about them in the beer garden after the game.
