The Lucknow Sentinel, 1994-11-02, Page 15Speaker shares insights
on dealing with death
by Margaret Stapleton
Palliative care volunteers were
Icft with a number of "grief nug-
gets" by the guest speaker at last
creek's filth annual meeting of .the
Wingham and Arca Palliative Care
Services.
Dr, Dclton Glebe, former
theology dean at Wilfrid Laurier.
University : in `Waterloo and cur-
rently professor of ethics.and geron-
tology, held the more than 30
present rapt with attention as he
shared his insights on flow to deal
with death and dying.
A book on the physical aspects of
death currently is on the best-seller
lists, said Dr. Glebe, adding that it
is a subject which fascinates on one
'hand, yet one from which people
shy away.
He called grief "inevitable" and
something which touches everyone.
"Grief is a function of attachment,"
and God's way of healing the
human psyche.
He cautioned palliative care
workers not to "hasten .to rid a
person of grief," as the old Hebrew
saying goes.. Society allows people
three days to grieve, but six months
into the: grief process may he the
most painful, Dr. Glebe added.
Sometimes we abandon the
bereaved, he said, because we- can-
not face their pain. A person who
has grieved will never he the same
again, but grief can he lived
through, not overcome or cured. •
He said at first grief is "hanging
on" to memories of the deceased,
pain and even anger.. Then people
go through the 'process of "letting
go" and finally "taking hold" of
their lives.
He cautioned support workers not
to judge feelings, but judge actions.
Day-to-day functioning is a• crucial
issue for the bereaved, he added. At
first they need support and later
challenge.
Later in the meeting, Pat Pictrek
was selected chairman of. the pal-
liative.carc board for 1994-95.

How to recogruze
suicidal behavior
People in the Wingham area
have an opportunity to "stop the
dying" by attending a Suicide
Intervention Workshop .being
offered on Nov. 8 and 9 in the -
Sacred Heart Church basement.
This two day workshop
focuses on recognizing suicidal
behavior and how to get that
• person the help they need. Like
CPR, this course teaches
participants how to perform an'
emergency intervention to stop
that person from taking their life.
Professionals trained in
counselling, medicine and
therapy are then called on if
necessary to help the person deal
'with the problems that brought
.• them to the brink of suicide.
Jodi Jerome and Kim Souch,
the workshop instructors, are
hoping to attract people from the
police, nursing, social service,
teaching, clergy, doctors,
neighbors, shopkeepers, parents,
residents in the Wingham arca to
this workshop. "By involving a
mixture of Wingham and arca
professionals in this workshop, I
am hoping that an informal
support network will form to
help support those trained in
suicide intervention," says
.Jerome.
Those interested in taking this
course arc encouraged to register
immediately due to limited
space. Call Jodi or Kim at 482-
9311 for information. Cost for
the two-day workshop is 5100.
