The Lucknow Sentinel, 1994-11-02, Page 3Landfill problem
shouldn't be dumped
on next generation
by,Pat Livingston
Pat Ellis of Bruce Township is
one person who is "disi-
llusioned" with public meetings
and any impact they have. on
government. Ellis strongly stated
her feelings at last week's
meeting in Teeswater where the
public was asked for its input on
criteria for a shared -use system
of landfill sites in Bruce County.
The former Belleville woman
says' she spent thousands of
hours on a committee in that
area when a new landfill site
was being chosen. "None of the
sites on the short list had our
recommendations. 1 really
believed in them (public
meetings) initially.""
"I believe the decision of
what's going to happen in the
next 20 years has been made,"
said Ellis during a telephone -
interview last week.
"I don't have the answers right
now," said Ellis, "but if we look
we can find one. We can't keep
opening dump sites. If you think
about the dollars being spent in
Ontario looking for sites we
could have built an incinerator or
investigated new technology. We
need to fix the legislation that
prohibits incineration."
Ellis expressed her fears regar-
ding centralization of garbage.
"If they keep pushing for this,
we're going to put it in the
hands of Targe companies. We
will end up ' with Toronto gar-
bage."
"We must look for a Tong -term
solution. I resent dumping this '
problem on the'next generation."
