The Lucknow Sentinel, 1994-09-21, Page 12Peace and used the temple for
musical celebrations and the collec-
tion Of alms for the poor, just 15
times a year.
The weekly meetings were held in
meeting houses which no longer
exist. The temple has three stories
to represent the Trinity, 12 pillars
for the apostles and four columns
for the virtues of Faith, Hope,
Charity, and Love. In the centre
stands the Ark. The four square
plan permits equal access on all
sides, to all who come.
From 1889 - 1918 the property
remained unused, and then the York
Pioneer and Historical Society,
purchased a portion of it and began
a program of repair, restoration and
museum collection. There are other
buildings with demonstrations and
displays of pioneer crafts and• ar-
tifacts.
A stop at the Upper Canada Mall
at Newmarket for a time of shop-
ping and supper concluded a very
successful outing for the day.

Ladies learn about different ways of worshipping
▪ by Mildred Loree
Three very different ways of
worshiping God were encountered
by the ladies of the Maitland Pres-
byterial as they travelled on Their
Bus Trip bn Sept. 8.
The first place we visited was the
Marylake Augustinian Monastery at
King City. There we were able to
visit the beautiful Shrine Church•
and see the bell tower formed by
irregular sized pieces of glass in
multicolor shades, extending one
hundred feet high with the sun
shining through. In front of the
tower is a sculpture with seven
different Biblical scenes surrounded
by the tree of knowledge of good
and evil intertwining upwards to
become the Cross. •
Father Eugene of thc Augustinian
order gave us a brief history of this
place of pilgrimage, retreat, and
prayer. We were fortunate to have
Allan Lowry present to play the
pipe organ for us, which is a mel-
ding of two organs, one from thc
Eaton estate, the other from the
Seagram estate. He told us there arc
over 6,000 pipes which require
tuning three times a year.
Following a tour of the grounds
and viewing the lake we got back
on the bus for a short trip to St.
Andrews Presbyterian Church, King
City where the ladies of the church

spirituality in the popularity of the
cross.
