The office of the Fire Marshal of
Ontario is taking a proactive ap-
proach to dealing with 'critical
incident stress (C1S)'.
Ken Jones, Fire Services Adviser
for this area was in town last week
to explain to firefighters and their
significant others that critical, in-
cident stress reactions are: "normal
reactions by a normal person to an
abnormal event."
J. Mitchell, PhD; defines a
critical incident as "any situation
faced by emergency personnel that,
causes them to experience unusually
strong emotional reactions which
have the potential to interfere with
their ability to function either on
the scene or later."
For emergency personnel, critical
incidents include: suicides, death or
serious injury of an emergency
worker, media interest in the event,
prolonged events, injury or death of
children, mass casualty incidents,
threats to emergency workers'
safety, natural disasters and tragic
or unexpected death.
Reactions can be physical (body
or general health),' cognitive (thc
way one thinks), emotional (the

Signs of CIS reaction can
manifest itself in many ways:.
nausea, muscle tremors, profuse
sweating, decreased problem sol-
ving, mental confusion, tunnel
vision, doubt,, irritability, anger,
numbnessor resentment. These
stress symptoms- may be acute
(within 24 to 72 hours after the
incident) or they may be delayed
and • appear a week or more later
and last weeks, months or years.

A Grey Bruce Critical Incident
Stress Team is in position to dis-
cuss thoughts, actions and reactions
to a stressful event. Jones said a
debriefing is "neither group therapy
nor a critique of the event." It is
group interaction during which a
trained mental health professional
assists emergency service personnel
to discuss thoughts, actions and
reactions to a stressful event, all the
time remembering they are "normal
reactions by normal people to ab-
normal events."
Debriefing sessions may be ar-
ranged by calling 1-376-2121 ext.
2456 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.
Monday to Friday. A crisis team
can be contacted anytime at the
same phone number using extension
