The Lucknow Sentinel, 1994-09-21, Page 7Understanding critical incident stress The office of the Fire Marshal of Ontario is taking a proactive ap- proach to dealing with 'critical incident stress (C1S)'. Ken Jones, Fire Services Adviser for this area was in town last week to explain to firefighters and their significant others that critical, in- cident stress reactions are: "normal reactions by a normal person to an abnormal event." J. Mitchell, PhD; defines a critical incident as "any situation faced by emergency personnel that, causes them to experience unusually strong emotional reactions which have the potential to interfere with their ability to function either on the scene or later." For emergency personnel, critical incidents include: suicides, death or serious injury of an emergency worker, media interest in the event, prolonged events, injury or death of children, mass casualty incidents, threats to emergency workers' safety, natural disasters and tragic or unexpected death. In August, four different Lucknow teams competed in the North Huron Soccer League . championship • games. Lucknow, Goderich, Win- gham, Blyth and Clinton entered a total of 20 teams. • The Lucknow Pee Wee team lost their first game to Blyth by a 2 - 1 score In their second game, the team defeated a strong Wingham squad by .a 4 - 0 score: In the final game, again against Blyth,. Luck - now was victorious 2 - 0 and cap- tured the overall championship. It was a well -played game. These stress symptoms- may be acute (within 24 to 72 hours after the incident) or they may be delayed and • appear a week or more later and last weeks, months or years. Jones explained techniques to help CIS responders working at an in- cident, and also that ways spouses, family and friends can help. CIS Debriefing . • • A Grey Bruce Critical Incident Stress Team is in position to dis- cuss thoughts, actions and reactions to a stressful event. Jones said a debriefing is "neither group therapy nor a critique of the event." It is group interaction during which a trained mental health professional assists emergency service personnel to discuss thoughts, actions and reactions to a stressful event, all the time remembering they are "normal reactions by normal people to ab- normal events." Debriefing sessions may be ar- ranged by calling 1-376-2121 ext. 2456 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday to Friday. A crisis team can be contacted anytime at the same phone number using extension 2450.
