James'poses with his mother Audrey after playing street hockey alone. James is one of many boys in
the area who are waiting for a Big Brother. Nearly 6,000 boys are on Big Brothers waiting lists across
the country. Recent research has found a correlation between boys who have a positive relationship with
their Big Brothers and those boys staying in high school and going on to post -secondary education.

There was a lot of sadness in the
house of Audrey Fitzgerald and her
son James, 12, when the boy's Big
Brother left the area for work
reasons. Greg Nicholson, formerly
of Lucknow, and the Wingham boy
had built a strong friendship. Now
James is back on Big Brothers'
waiting list, like'a number of other
boys in the area.
"It's been perfect --we have lots of
fun. I can talk to him about things,
like hockey and problems at school.
It's not like he talks and I listen; it
goes both ways," James said.
"James didn't have a strong
relationship with his dad. He
needed a male role model, someone,
to do guy things with. Greg was a
good influence," Audrey said..
The two stillwrite to each other
and call, but it isn't the same. They
used to play floor hockey together,
-go camping, catch movies in
Goderich. They went on special
trips organized and paid,for•by Big
Brothers, like a bus ride to Toronto
to see the Blue Jays play the
Yankees.

Brother, said Anita Taylor,
executive director of the North
Huron Big Brothers Association., In
North Huron (Wingham, Lucknow,
Clinton, Goderich; Seaforth and
surrounding area), 22. boys are
matched with Big' Brothers and 26
boys are on the waiting list.
Nationally, nearly 6,000 boys are
waiting.
Taylor said these boys need a
male presence in their life.
• "James reaped all the benefits of
having Greg's positive influence...
We all know that the more stable
one's life is, the better you're going
to do, and the higher your self-
esteem. That will help you down
the road with choices you make."
Men who become Big. Brothers
commit to the program for one year
and spend four hours each week
with their Little Brothers.
"The focus is on good quality
time shared together, things that
don't cost too much money," she
said.
Taylor said many merchants' are
generous towards participants in the
association, providing free bowling,
free movie rentals, discounts on
meals and free admission to

Brothers ride bikes together, play
road hockey, or work on a farm

After men contact the Goderich•
office of the association, they are
carefully screened and given some
training if they desire it.
Dave .Shaw, vice principal of
.Howick'Central School and a mem-
ber of the Wingham committee of
Big Brothers, said it is difficult to
find people willing to participate.
"That's the number . one thing
right now: over" 20 boys are un-
matched.
Weneed people to
provide a part of the boys' life they
don't have. It's tough to find people
willing to make the commitment.
People are wrapped up in their own
life and don't seem to have the
time," Shaw said. -
Shaw knows James well and
witnessed the Edendship that grew
' between the boy and Nicholson.
"It really made a difference.
We're hoping to match him up with
someone." .
James is also hopeful.
"Sometime soon maybe I'll get a
new Big Brother," he said. •
