4-H group is back from the west
A contingent of Bruce County 4-
H members has arrived home from
a 10 -day exchange visit in Lamont,
Alberta. During July, the local
group hosted . 11 members from
Lamont.
Sharon Weber, leader the group,
says they had a "terrific time."
The arrived in Edmonton on July
19 and toured around the area
seeing oil wells and the Dow
Chemical Plant.
The next day was spent touring
Lamont County where they grow a
lot of canola, hay and grain. Sharon
says most of the farms are beef,
with very few dairy or swine
operations. The land is very flat,
with very few trees. The trees are
all cut away from hydro and
telephone wires.
One particular arca Sharon
noticed was that the roads are not
nearly as well maintained as ours.
The group also took in the game
between the Edmonton Eskimos and
Ottawa Rough Riders, where the
west was victorious.
When visiting some small villages
in the arca, they were surprised. to
find that each has its own mascot.
Andrew's is a .large duck; Veger-
ville's a large Easter egg; Mundare
has a grato, and Lamont a large hill
to represent the dreaded gophers.
At the West Edmonton Mall they
took in a dolphin show and enjoyed
the amusement park. '
On July 22, they went to Elk
National Park and had a potluck
dinner with all the host 4-H mem-
bers and their families. Each Bruce
County visitor was presented with
pins from the Reeve of Lamont
County and the MLA.
And what would a trip Lathe west
be without attending a rodeo and all,
that is associated with it. Sharon
says the group had an "excellent
time here.'; ,
On Saturday evening the group

tempted its taste,buds with Uk-
rainian food at " Taste of Uk-
raine.”
An early morning rise was neces-
sary on Sunday to make their way
to Banff. On the way they stopped
at Drumheller and saw „the Hoo
Doos, a coal mine and two dinosaur
museums, and crossed the swinging
bridge, and stayed 'overnight.
The next morning they enjoyed a
beautiful drive through the moun-
tains as they continued on to Banff.
A view from a gondola going to the
top of the • mountain was "ma-
gnificent" says Sharon..
On Tuesday they continued on to
the Columbia lcefields where it was
real cold and lots of snow; on to
Lake Louise, a beautiful and breath
taking place, and then a stop at
Johnston Canyon on the way to
Jasper. Elk, moose, deer, mountain
sheep and goats were visible on the
side of the road.
A day of shopping was enjoyed at
the Londery Mall. .
Their last full day in the west was
spent in Edmonton visiting the
Matart greenhouse, Fort Edmonton,
the science centre and watching a
country and western music laser
show.
The trip culminated with a bumpy
flight and- landing in Toronto.
Family members gather
on Clandonald farm.
The 29th Clandonald Reunion was
held July 30 on the grounds of
Clandonald Farm. Hosts were Joan
and Carl Deleuze, Toronto, Carlyn
MacDonald, and her sons Scott and
Ian from Sudbury.
The program was organized by
Beth and Ray Popplewell of
Kitchener, and much amusement
resulted from such games as toss
the shoe and pass the water balloon.
All children present received a
small gift in remembrance of the
reunion. Marilyn Maclntyre, of
Lucknow, was alsorewarded for
having the most offspring present as
well as Ross MacDonald of
Kitchener for having a birthday
closest to 65 years of age.
The fine weather made visiting
under the trees a pleasure and the
potluck supper was served on the
grounds instead of at the Kairshea
Hall.
Eight youngsters below the age of
16 received commemorative D -Day
dollars presented by Scott Mac-
Donald, following a tradition es-
tablished by his late grandfather,
Ross MacDonald.
Following the supper, the group
was entertained by impromptu trio
renditions from Ira Dickie and Dale
Gilchrist of Lucknow, • and
Maryanne Nicholson Higgins of
Toronto. ,
Donald MacDonald, of Missis-
sauga and Scott MacDonald, of
Sudbury, sons of the late John A.
MacDonald, were elected president
and secretary of the next reunion in
1996,
