shipwrecks in Bruce waters
On Thursday, Aug. 11 marine
historian and diver Ron Beaupre
will be giving a narrated slide
presentation featuring many of the
shipwrecks which dot the beautiful
blue waters of Bruce County
coastline. Ron will detail a short
history of each, ship and give a
description of the wreck as it
occurred, along with views taken
underwater. Come and see the
mystery and bounty available only
to the select few who dare to delve
below these deep cold waters.
Ron has been interested in marine
history and shipping since he was a
young boy and as member of the
Ontario Marine Heritage Committee
since 1985, has been involved in
underwater archaeology and the
preservation of significant marine
heritage sites. His research has
taken him to the CPR archives in
Montreal, the Ontario as well as the
National Archives and research
centres on both sides of the Great
lakes. He is part of a large network
of researchers who are continually
sharing their work with each other.
On Thursday Aug. 18, Captain
Philip Viser will give .a lecture on
Search and Rescue. Captain Viser
is an Instructor in Marine
Navigation and Marine Emergency
Duties at Georgian College, Owen
Sound.
Capt. Viser's presentation will
include details of past tragedies in
the area, local examples of search
and rescue as well as how and by
whom search and rescue is carried
out. Included in the lecture will be
tips on what every person on the
water can do for themselves to help
any search and rescue team who
may be looking for them. There
will be time for questions and
sampling of search and rescue items
will be on display.
The new Bruce Coast Gallery will
be open, folldwing the lecture for
the participants, to get a first hand
look at some of the artifacts
associated .with. shipwrecks, search
and rescue and safety. Admission
to the lecture is 53.00.
Both evenings will. start at 7:30
p.m. at the Bruce County Museum.
An admission of $3. will be
charged with the proceeds going to
the Bruce Coast Gallery.
