Seniors Centre offers
A great
two new programs
by George Walker
Huron/Bruce is a great place to
spend the summer. I've been
vacationing here, since the '70s.
Huron/Bruce offers visitors so
much to see and do. Most of all,
the people are great. There is 'a
genuine friendliness here, a real
sense of community, in centres both
Targe and small:
I was in high school when my
folks began renting a farm house
near Dungannon. The house was
secluded from the gravel road by a
number of trees. We were roughing
it a bit. But it was wonderful to be •
there after a hectic year in the city.
One year, I brought along my
grandfather's cowboy hat to keep
off the sun. I also borrowed his
binoculars to see things up close.
So, -with hat uneasily atop my head
it was off to see the sights.
1 generally got no further then the
pond down the road. I sat for hours
in the summer sun, watching the
frogs.
I have always been somewhat of
an adventurer. There was a log that
ran across the length of the pond. It
looked easy to go down there and
catch some frogs. It took about ten
seconds 'til I fell in. I was clearly
no threat to the local amphibians.
My mother made me change in the
stairwell of the basement when .I
came home. I had my own dis-
tinctive odor for the next few days.
I began to get a feeling for the
Friday is Glads
Day „i n Lucknow
It's time for Glad Days.
In Lucknow, as well as all across.
Canada, volunteers will be selling
gladiolus in an effort to raise funds
and public awareness for suffers of
epilepsy.
This is an important fund raising
g
event for the Huron -Perth -Bruce
Epilepsy organization, based in
Clinton. A successful campaign will
ensure the continuation of much
needed services to epilepsy suffers
and their families.
Locally, Nancy Becker, with help
from the Pathfinders and Girl
Guides will selling glads from . the
Knechtel parking . lot on Friday,
Aug. 5. The cost is $3.50 for one
bunch or $6 for two.
Orders may be placed by calling

Native peoples
were furious

closed. Local native
peoples were
furious. They asked that control of
Blue Quills school be turned over
to the local school committee. The
government was slow to ack-
nowledge their requests and in July,
1970, sixty natives began a sit-in.
"The reason we had that sit-in,"
one man explained, "was so we
could take over the school ourselves
and run it the way we want. It was
our school."
Over the next month, support for
the sit-in grew. Nearly 300 natives
and whites participated and sym
pathy pickets marched in Edmon-
ton. Telegrams from all over the
country poured into the Department
of Indian Affairs.
Finally, the Department of Indian
Affairs agreed to transfer control of.
the school to the Blue Quills Native
Education Council.
On Sept. 1, 1970, Blue Quills
became the first school in Canada
to be officially administered by
native peoples. Cree became part of
the curriculum and about half of the
total staff was native.
The takeover of Blue Quills
schools helped spawn a larger
movement for native control of
native education. Today, more than
half the Indian bands in Canada
operate their own schools.
arca during those early summers.
I'm a great fan of old general stores
and we visited many in our travels.
The stores located in places like St.
Augustine, Nile and Lanes have
long since disappeared. We attended
all sorts of community bazaars.
That was where I first indulged
myself with those wonderful
goodies from the bake table!
Today, summers are great in St.
Helens. My parents own a little
home here. My wife and I are en-
joying our vacation in this quiet,
friendly community.
I don't go after frogs anymore.
Today, I am a frisbee fanatic. As I
write this, Diane and I have played
frisbee in Wingham's ball park. We
intend to visit other choice sights,
including our favorite, Gore Park in
Ripley. Keep an eye out for us!
George Walker is a radio per,
sonality employed by CKOT-FM in
Tillsonburg. He and his wife, Diane
make their home there. George' s
columns have appeared in his
hometown paper and in a paper in
Burford, Brant County.

Unit. Resources are readily
available and referrals are made to
other health care professionals as
needed.
Monthly Inspirations has a
spiritual component. Area clergy
are invited to facilitate a group
