15 -year-old Karissa Dickle, of Kinloss Township, models one of
the Magazine Art brooches she makes. Herjewellery items are.
marketed under the name Karlssef. (Pat Livingston photo)
Kinloss teen turns hobby
into small business
by Pat Livingston
A Kinloss township teenager has
turned her hobby into a small, , but
what she hopes will be a. lucrative
little business. '
Karissa , Dickie's handmade
Magazine Art jewellery is unique,
and no two pieces are ever iden-
tical. The jewellery art is also a
form' of recycling, as Karissa uses
paper from magazines as the central
part of her pieces, to which 'she
affixes various types of wire and
beads. She got the idea from a book
her brother, ' Shea, brought home
from school.
Currently Karissa makes earrings,
barrettes, pins and bolo ties. Her
work is on display at From Our -
Heart, and in the near future she
will be consigning her "Karissell"
designs -to a large craft, outlet in
Pickering.
The Grade 11 student says that at
this time she is contemplating post-
secondary education in the art field.
In addition to her little business,
Karissa is a member of Lucknow's
swim team and is at the white level
in swimming lessons.''
Christian School rezoning
approved near Bluevale
A rezoning in Turnberry
Township could pave the way for
the construction of a Christian
school on 10, acres of land in
Bluevale.
The zoning changes the recently -
severed parcel to institutional from
developmental. Council also placed
the property under site plan control
to ensure orderly development
according to township requirements.
A delegation of interested parties
attended the meeting of Tumberry
council held June 21 at the
municipal .office. Those in
attendance were: property owner
William Cullen; Dave Robson of
Brussels, on behalf of the
"Christian Academy" and architect
Rick Plant of Hanover; Bluevale
neighbors Dan Campbell and Bryan
Shaw, as well as Gary Davidson
and Ruth Knight of the Huron
County Planning Department.
Mr. Robson spoke on behalf of
the group' proposing to 'build the
school. "We are not Christian
Reformed or Catholic," he
explained, but a group of parents
with concerns about dictates from
the provincial government and their
effect on the quality of education
•
for their children.
"We will still pay our school
taxes (too the public system) and pay
for this too," Mr. Robson said.
"It's not a rebellious type of thing,"
he added, pointing out that groups
like the Mennonites operate schools
for their children..
He said 50 families are. involved
in the project with an estimated
enrolment of 50 to 60 pupils to
start. Mr. Robson said the school
will include Kindergarten to Grade
13 and be equipped to hold as
many as 200 students. It is
modeled after a school in London,
he added.
The group has an option on the
10 -acre parcel at Bluevale, which it
will purchase if the rezoning is
approved, he added.
Mr. Plant gave a brief overview
of plans for the 14,000 -square foot
school building. ' The "Christian
Academy" would be a brick veneer
building with classrooms, an office
and washroom facilities. Plans do
not include a gymnasium at the
present time.
Mr. Davidson said the planning.
