Rangers' win looked good on ...
The New York Rangers won the
Stanley cup on June 14 and the
hockey world will never he the
same. No more ghosts or curses, no'
more 1940, no more summer.
The Rangers took forever to win
the championship and appropriately
did it in a season that took forever.
The NHL campaign lasted eight
months and nine days, not including
exhibition games and post -season
award ceremonies. The season now
stretches as far as the zeroes on the
end of Pavel Bure's contract.
But their duration and the bench -
clearing brawl on the streets of
Vancouver were the only bad things
about the playoffs. Fans from Bos-
ton Bar, B.C., and Bayonne, New
Jersey, may not agree but a lot
looked good about,the Rangers' cup
victory.
The win' looked good on Craig
McTavish, who will probably retire,
and especially on Steve Lamer,
who's finally got a ring to show for
a dozen seasons of playing every
day. These .two are. quintessential
16.00.001 Canadian players. They play tough,
with emotion, and never complain...
The win looked good on Adam
Graves, whose 'summer won't be
long cnough•for al} the charity work
he does, .and . on the •,unassuming
heroes Brian Lcetch and • :v1tkr
Richter, who will feel much more

Pee Wee 1

tourney
The 1.ucknow Pee Wec 1 hardball
teaim played the games on June
18 at Goderich,'in the Sca Hawk,
tournament.
•
- They defeated •Kincardine 11. 0
in the first game, and then Loddon
17 to 5. This put the team into the
"A" championship game. The game
was very close until.. the fifth inning
when the bats carne alive. Final
score 1.5 to 5.
The was the 13th win, no losses
and one tie for the season.
• Team members include Jeff
Andrew, Troy McKenzie, Mark

The win looked good on assistant
coach Colin Campbell, who's first
in line for a head coaching job after
providing much of New York's
technical expertise, and on Dick
Todd,. who missed twice at the
Memorial cup but didn't let this one
slip away.
The win looked good on Doug
Lidster, who was' banished to the
bench most of the season without
complaint, then •cracked. the lineup
for the final and made a memorable
contribution. The win may have
looked good off New York, hut it's
hard to notice a difference.
The win looked good on Mike
Keenan, who would make a good
neighbor despite the exterior view,
and 11 looked better on Neil Smith,
the' general manager who sat in the
back scat while Keenan did the.
driving. Keenan had input but
Smith pulled the trigger on the
.trades'that pushed the Rangers over
the top.
The win looked especially good
on all those New York writers who
had stories ready for the Big Apple
choke and expected Vancouver to
tie the seventh game at 19:40 of the
third period. Come to think of it,
that would have • been .rather
dramatic.
.But most of all the Ranger -Van-
couver championship looked good
on the game. The final was better
than the first round for a change -
rugged, yet controlled and as fast as
it was frantic. It featured every kind
of player from Cliff Ronning to Jay
.Wells and every part of the world
from Finland (Jyrki Lummc) to
Flourtown (Mike Richter).
Fact is, if that final doesn't con,
vmc e the uninitiated' public that
hockey i, more than the, WWF on
blades, they'll never sell pucks in
Pawtucket and Pixley.
And that, friends, is the short,'or
rather long, of it.
