Centre for Students opened last week and placement officer Karah Kirkland advises students to register with the centre as soon as possible. . Karah said there have been lots of students at the centre to register for employment. • In addition, Karah and fellow placement officer Sandy Maclntire have held a lunch-hour registration at the Kincardine and District Sec- ondary School. In total, they have had about 100 students register so far in the region. Karah said it's looking good for students this year. Last year,' the centre had place- ments for 675 students in the Kincardine., Walkerton and Hanover area. The centre serves students and employers in the Ki;.:ardine,. Tiverton, Ripley and . icknow areas. Karah is anticipating a lot of summer positions for students through stores, restaurants and other businesses as well as many "odd jobs" such as haying which last for shorter periods of time. • "I'm excited about it," she said. Positions available last week included public relations, child workers, grounds keepers and activ- ity planners. .They 'are aiming to find even more placements for students and provide more . services to both employers and students. Karah recommends students call or come by on a regular basis to check what jobs are available. The jobs are .posted at the office at 859 Queen Street. After hours, students can call 519-881-0360. With a touch-tone phone, students can access a list of jobs posted in the area: • In addition to finding jobs, stu- dents can get help with resumes and find advice on interviews and over letters at, the centre. There is also literature available about ' government programs, OSS AP and other services students may need. The placement officers are tentatively planning several activ- ities to promote the centre including a beach volleyball . tournament, barbecue and Canada Day window painting. "We want to get involved with a lot of the community events in Kincardine." The centre is located at 859 Queen Street and is open Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Student of the week Debbie Nicholson has recently returned to Lucknow after completing her first year of Business Accounting at •Fan- shawe College in London. Like• many other students, Debbie is now. looking for. ;employment to last over the summer until she returns to .her studies in September. Debbie has previously worked at a car dealership and at several retail stores in the. Lucknow ' area. As a result, she has gained experience in bookkeeping, 'accounting and in. the sales and service field. Ideally, Debbie would like to find a summer job as a book- keeper`' for an area business., However, she is willing to work at any sort of job. A strong work 'ethic, en- thusiasm and. a willingness to learn are all qualities that Debbie possesses. Debbie is also punctual and has excellent. inter- personal skills. Many. employers would fend Debbie, or a student like her, a superb employee.
