The Lucknow Sentinel, 1994-06-01, Page 5Cars in town are travelling too fast TO THE EDITOR To the editor: I am writing this letter as a con- , cerned parent and care giver. Two weeks ago we were away for a few days to come home to the news that our neighbors dog had been hit by a car and killed. He was a good, friendly dog who meant a lot to his family. Unfor- tunately he was not quite trained yet to stay away from the road (He had come a long way since being with his family). I am, not writing this letter to make the person who hit him feel worse than they already do. My purpose is only to bring to your. attention a serious problem in our community. The trucks and cars that are coming into and going out of town are going way too fast. They are either speeding up while going out of town or not slowing down to come into town. Sometimes they don't slow • down until they are at the stop sign at the main street. Between Huron Landscaping and the first corner,' there' are ap- proximately 20 kids,' 10 years old and under. That is not counting the kids that I look after' or' who might be visiting any family at any given time. I am as guilty as the next person for speeding sometimes but I keep reminding myself to slow down. As on many other streets in town, there. are small children and pets playing and no matter how hard we try to teach them to stay away from the road, kids and pets do, not always . think or do as they are told. We are in the process of trying to get a highway sign erected stating that kids are at play. This is to help remind motorists to please slow down in and around town. Kids and pets can come out of nowhere at anytime. The speed limit along here is 50 km/hr. Please slow down and obey the limits. For those who are not familiar with this week, it is a chance for us to determine just how accessible our community is for the disabled by identifying the bar- riers they face. As well, we try and show people and make them aware that being disabled doesn't make them any different as to who they are. As a committee, we try and make everyone aware of these barriers and take action to change. This is a year-round project. The social well-being of a community requires that people of all kinds are included and TO THE EDITOR accepted as equals. We as a community' can assist our fellow community members by being aware of any upcoming community projects or --renovations that can be made to make our community accessible. If you have any questions, or ideas for us, please do not, hesitate to call one of our com- mittee members. Margie MacPherson, Joan Chamney, and Audrey Ritchie Lucknow and District Access 'Awareness Committee Don't say to me, 'Oh, your poor child'! By Marilyn M. Dow, Parent Delegate "I don't know how you do it?" Don't you hate hearing those words. If one more person comes up to. me and says "Oh your poor child," right in front -of my son, I think l'll scream! Don't you wish you had. a wonderful comeback on the tip of your tongue; something witty,, cerebral and just a tiny bit sarcastic. , The question is, why do total strangers feel they can approach us in a public place and ask or say the most personal things: And what about' the unsolicited gifts! My son has been offered a Teddy Bear at a fair (no thank you, I'm trying to teach my children not to accept gifts from strangers): a $20 bill (no thank you, but if you'd, like to make a donation on his behalf his choice of charitable or- ganization would be the. Easter Seal Society); and balloons galore (no - thank you, unless you have enough for all my children I feel it's unfair for only one to have a balloon). . Then there was the time he. was blessed with holy oil from Jerusalem by a passing nun! (Please don't tell my mother -she's Jewish). "How do you cope?" "I could never do what you do." "He's so lucky to have you as a parent." And my personal favorite -"You're so special." I think there should be a law against using the word "special" in relation to any disability. Frankly it's not special, it's downright annoying. Especially the part about having to deal with strangers' comments. • Who are these people intruding into our lives as though a wheelchair means "ask the anything." I would never approach a stranger' in a public place, and presume to understand his or her feelings. Yet this happens regularly to virtually all parents of children with visible disabilities. • A few weeks ago my special needs workerwas out with my son at the food court of a shopping mall. Colin had a thermos with a straw in it on his tray. While Donna's back was turned • momentarily a woman came up to Colin and stuck the straw in his mouth explaining to her own child, how she was helping a poor, thirsty boy to drink. She actually put something into my totally defenseless son's mouth. I can't imagine what I would have said had I been there, even now the thought fills me with rage. . So, how do we respond to this? The reply that immediately springs to my lips "*&^%$#@! will probably, not generate the kind of tolerance. and understanding that we really want to foster. Discussions about this subject around our kitchen table always produce a reaction that is part black humor and part catharsis. • (reprinted from "Update"), The Fundraising Committee of the Huron County Community Child Abuse Co-ordinating Committee, would like to... • THANK all the people and businesses who made the Sixth Annual Teddy Bear Dream Auction and Raffle a great success!
