George Whitby was a member of the 7th Canadian Medium
Regiment, RCA and fought on the beaches of Normandy.
Whitby fired
final shot
for his Regiment

By May 4, 1945, Whitby and
the rest of the troops had
progressed to Venheusen.
It was there they received
word there would be a cease fire
at 8 a.m. the next day.
The last shot from Whitby's
position was fired at 6:25 p.m.
on May 4, 1945.
Whitby had fired the final
shot.
After the war, Whitby travelled
to Buckingham Palace where he
received his Military Medal from
King George.
He remained in the military
until 1946 when he returned
home to Lucknow.
"I don't like to talk about these
things but to think of a changin
world and of the future," Whitby
said.

Each time his gun took a new
position, they would dig the gun
into the ground. The holes
`protected both the gun and men
from flying shrapnel from enemy
shells.
"The enemy would be trying to
blow us up and we'd try to blow
them up," he said.
Whitby said phone lines were
laid ahead of them and used to
communicate target positions for
the guns.
Allied troops progressed
through France, liberating Paris
on August 25, 1944 and by
September, most of France had
been liberated.
When they took a gun position
in Caen, France, Whitby was
promoted to Battery Sergeant
Major and received the Military
Medal for valor beyond the call

man hits
hydro pole
A Dungannon .man has been
charged with impaired driving
after the car he was driving
struck a hydro pole.
The car crossed the centre line
on Highway 86 near sideroad 20
of Kinloss Twp. colliding with'
the hydro pole.
The man backed out of the
ditch but stopped when police
and ambulance arrived.
The man was also charged
with mischief under $1000 when
the top of a toilet at the.
Kincardine OPP station was
smashed on the floor.
The incident occurred 'May 28.
BICYCLES STOLEN
Four bicycles were stolen from
a Cedar Close cottage over the .
winter.
When the owner, Steve Foster
of New Dundee, returned to the
cottage this spring, he found that
a tricycle, a•CCM• ladies bicycle
and two male 10 speed' bicycles
were taken from an utility shed.
The • bicycles arc valued at
$200.
