Lucknow's set to `hee haw'
LUCKNOW - The Lucknow and
District Chamber of Commerce• is
hosting its third annual Western
Days this. week.
Starting Thursday and right
through to Saturday, merchants will
be dressed up in their best bib and
tucker, and it better be western! If
not, there's a tall, lanky sheriff
making the rounds and no matter if
it's the butcher, the baker or the
candlestick maker he's set to lock
'em up in jail. Bail has been set at
S5,and the proceeds go to that there
School 'on wheels
is site for
literacy
workshops
The Sloman School Car will be
hosting :on-site workshops during
the Clinton Family Literacy Festival
which will take place from June 6-
10, at the Fair Grounds in Clinton.
The School on Wheels moved by
rail to sparsely settled areas of
Northern Ontario to serve as a
classroom for children of railway
workers, trappers, prospectors and
lumbermen. Fred Sloman of Clinton
was one of the teachers in the con-
verted coach owned by the CNR.
Over 1,000 children graduated from
this unique school, including Fred
and Cela Sloman's five children.
The car was moved to Clinton in
1982 and painstakingly
reconstructed. On May 17, 1986 the
car was officially designated as an
Ontario Heritage Site by the On-
tario Heritage. Foundation, Ministry
of .Citizenship' and Culture.
A Mini' shuttle bus will provide
transportation from the Clinton Fair
Grounds to the Sloman School Car.
There is no fee for the general
public for the daytime workshops or
for the evening performances on
Wednesday and Thursday.
