From Norway to Lucknow
An opportunity to improve his English.
by Pat Livingston
An organization called Student
Travel Schools made it possible for
a young Norwegian to , fulfill a
desire to travel and see another part
of the world.
Marius Gabrielsen has been living
with Barb, Evans and Adrian Helm
since September last year, and
attending classes at F.E. Madill
Secondary School. The Helms saw
an advertisement about the program
and applied two years ago to host a
student.
Marius had .the opportunity of
choosing Canada, the United States,
New Zealand, Australia or France.
Marius is from Mandal, the most
southern town in Norway, with a
population of 12,400. He says the
city used • to be .a famous port
around 100 years. ago. Now the city
is honk to two large companies that
make sections of ships. In the sum-
mer, Mandal, with its beautiful
beaches, becomes a tourist attrac-
tion.
Although attending classes here,.
Marius' will . receive no credit for
them. He will continue his
education where he left off prior to
coming to Canada. .
In Norway, children start school
at the age of 6 or 7, and it is man-
datory to attend for nine years. The
education, system is different than in
Ontario. Children are introduced to
the English language in Grade 4.
Marius says his visit was a great
opportunity for him to improve his
use and understanding of our lan-
guage.
His involvement with extracur-
ricular activities at school included
playing the trombone with the stage
band. Marius was no stranger to the
instrument as he had played tor
many years, but not for the last
two. Now that he had been re-
introduced to it, he plans to con-
tinue playing.
'just for the fun"
He was a member of the ski team
as' well. During the winter, Marius
andianother exchange student from
Sweden, who is hosted . by the
Fishers in Teeswater, strapped on
their cross-country skis for an
outing. They.covered a 57 km trail,
between Teeswater and Wingham in
around five hours, "just for the
fun".. Evans- says Marius was one
.of the few who really enjoyed our
hard 'winter this year. •
"It's been great here, says
Marius. "Lots of things are the
same." But he did find the flat land
really different.
Favorite sports in Norway are
cross-country skiing and speed
skating in the winter, and soccer in
the summer.
Baseball was a new experience
for Marius, who admitted he really
didn't know what it was before
coining here. The Helms and
friends have turned him into a Blue
Jay fan and he will make a trip to.
the . SkyDome before returning
home.
He's visited Ottawa, the CN
Tower and of course the Bruce
nuclear plant He played "trucker"
for a week and travelled to Florida
with Woody Atkinson. Before retur-
ning home, he will visit Niagara
Falls.
It's been an exciting 10 months
for Marius, but it will end on June
4 when he returns to Norway to his
summer job at a manna and
vacation centre. Finding summer
work can be difficult in Mandal,
and Marius says he is fortunate to
be able to return to where he
worked last year.
And what does the future hold in
store for Marius. Right now he
plans to .finish his education, travel
across Asia for one year, and then
serve his mandatory one year in the
army. After that, who knows?
