Beware of fraud artists
Kincardine OPP are warning
people this is the season for
fraud scheme artists to appear.
OPP Sergeant Brigger said this
is the time people start going
door to door offering to do such
things as driveway paving or
other contracting.
He said theserip-off artists
will ask for a deposit and never
be seen again.
"This hasn't occurred here
yet," Sergeant Brigger said. But
there have been incidents in the
past.
When people are :approached
by someoneoffering to do some
contracting;, Sergeant Brigger
advises people make sure they
have the proper authority to be
canvassing door to door.
In Kincardine, a licence is
required to go door to door.
He also suggested asking for a
list of references to check the
authenticity of the "contractor".
People can also obtain other
quotes from local contractors
They know, to compare the costs.
"Be aware of the amount of
deposit given." -
He said most legitimate con-
tractors require deposits of about
10 per cent of the job to be
done.
"Ensure a written contract is
obtained outlining all the 'details
of the transaction."
"Verbalpromises are not bind-
ing?'
•
In addition, people can contact
the Ministry of Consumer and
Commercial Relations to check
on a supposed contractor at 1-
