NEW HOLLAND Knoop's orchard fulfills his life-long dream by Mike Robinson For Anthony Knoop, Lakeside Acres orchard is the fulfillment of a life-long dream. Diane Knoop, his wife, says the enterprise was built up over a num- ber of years. The house and out- buildings were built in the late.'70s, and the large shed was built in the early '90s. She says the creation of the or- chard was a life-long goal for her husband, who was born in Holland and trained as an orchardist. Mr. Knoop was in school in Hol- land when World War II broke out. During the occupation of that country, all schools were closed, and he worked in the orchards. After the war ended, he decided to become an orchardist and to get further training. He worked during the day and went to school at night. Mrs. Knoop explained the training in Holland does not only included proper orchard care, but on how to run a business, Eventually sponsored to come to Canada, Mr. Knoop found work on a dairy farm and later owned a dairy farm next to where Lakeview Acres is located. Then his asthma became bad because of the dust within the barn, He was told at that time to stay away from the barn. Because of that he sold the dairy operation. "It was now or never," said Mrs. Knoop. She said Mr. Knoop and his first wife decided to create an orchard on .the 43 acres property - 28 of those acres are now orchards. The orchards now contain ov'er 7,000• fruit trees. Although the orchard is predominantly apple and cherry, it also contains pear, peach and plum trees. Also grow are asparagus, red and black currents and strawberries. Lakeview Acres ships out apples and pears, but. Mrs. Knoop says there are not enough of the other types of fruit to ship out. The property also has a pond stocked with bass and trout. Many people believe the 20 ft. deep pond is natural, says Mrs. Knoop. It was in fact, dug out by Mr. Knoop. The problem, says his wife, is now - finding the time to fish. He enjoys it, but.Mrs. Knoop says the orchard requires a lot of work. Extrapcoplc are hired according to the season, but a fair amount (Abe time, it is just he and his wife working on the orchard. "I think it is neat because it'satis- fied his life-long dream," said Mrs. Knoop. Diane and Anthony Knoop, of Lakeside Orchards, R.R. 3, Goderich. Safety tip Safe Bale Transport A bystander was killed by a large round bale that ,bounced off a flatbed wagon near the top of a hill. Operators MUST ensure that bales are securely tied . down when transporting -loads on public road- ways. And don't overdo it - the weight of a load should never be heavier than the pulling unit. Use. proper drawbolts and safety chains, lock the brake pedals together, and follow all the rules of the road.
