The business originated in 1894 when Allan Bert and his brotherand sister set up a tannery and glove factory. Allan: `Bert worked -in the tannery in Winghain. His brother Frank ' worked in the woollen mill in Teeswater. Their sister Jen was.. the company bookkeeper. When Allan passed away in 1.930 at the age of 59,, his son, Franklin joined the family business to work alongside his Uncle Frank Sr: until his death at age of 64 in 1.934. In 1935 Franklin was married, and his. wife Cenetta joined the business. The riame'of the business was changed to. ' Glenyce and her husband !Richard 'Snell have four children- Franklin, Jayne, Amanda and Richard. Sheepskins are purchased from packing plants in Canada • and the United States. These sheepskins and leather are pro- cessed in the•Rainton plant outside Blyth. Leather is graded for quality suitable for, coats, jackets, gloves, hats, handbags.and moccasins. The leather suitable1or.garments is sent• toone of four garment fdctories in Toronto.. ,Other leathers are sent to Kitchener and Quebec fir glove manufacturing,. while ' another grade of leather is made into hats, and suitable grades are used for handbags and .moccasins.
