The Lucknow Sentinel, 1994-01-12, Page 5API Brookside welcomes new students by Donna Fielder, and Mike Van Niekerk Hello, what is your name? That is the question that is on our minds. We are happy to welcbrne the beginner kindergarten children. Welcome to Larissa Cassidy, Julie Phillips, John Elphick„ Ian Boak, Cameron Alton, Beth MacDonald, Jayne Van Dyke, Benjamjn Sloet- jes, Dominic Staehli, Jesse Millar. They started their classes on Jan. 3, 1994. They have just started to get into the swing of the way Brook- side operates, getting used to the teachers' names and the new ex- perience of school. To go into this -program, the children have to be four years of age. The beginner kindergarten classes have some new equipment to use. Some of the equipment includes an ironing board, two little tractors, a tricycle, a washer and dryer where you can move ` the drums yourself, a two -wheeled garden cart, a shopping cart, and a climber. • House league volleyball has now started. Also the Junior boys and Junior girls school teams have started their practices. The coaches of the junior girls are Mr. Whiteley and Mrs. Tebbutt, and the coach of the junior boys is Mr. Lobb. Wh00000 is working on an Owl Unit? Well, it is Mr. Lobb's Grade 4/5! 'They are learning research skills in the library while they in- vestigate owls.' They are also watching films about owls in their habitat, and their food. They have learned about owl food pellets, by , taking them apart. Owls are very helpful birds! They eat lots of mice and moles! The class is reading a book about owls. The book is titled Owls in the Family, by Farley Mowat.. Room 102/103 are ROARING witty their Wild Cat Unit. The students are doing research about the' Wild Cat's habitat, their food,. and their families. They will' be learning more, from the compact disk research program "Mammals" from National Geographic. This program contains sound,. moving pictures, graphs, charts, and tests, to give lots of information! Other students in 102/103 will be making a research booklet in the library, about local forest, animals. BROOKSIDE BROADCAST Gitup Il Grade 7s are studying the physical earth in Geography. They are in three "Jigsaw Groups". Smaller "Expert Groups" will study volcanoes, mountains, fossil fuels, earthquakes, and continental drift. After the experts return to their jigsaw groups, they will share their information. The unit will end with a test based on the experts' ques- tions. Rooms 9, 10, and 11 (Mrs. Teb- butt, Mrs. Dozois, and Mr. Hazlitt) are doing an interview assignment based on friends and relatives that can tell us stories about their lives. The stories have to be before and during the 1960s. After they are done, they will be in book form and will be displayed on Author's Day in May., The students are enjoying gathering: stories of yesterday to treasure and to share with others. Grade 2/3 students in Room 101, (Mrs. Young and Miss Anguish) ale learning about Stratford artist Ezi't Beddows, who illustrated the "Zoom" books. They've read all three books, and are writing a letter and making pictures for him. One of his.books is about Egypt, so the group will soon be learning about ancient Egypt. Who is Zoom? /-a very unusual cat! It's that time again, when stu, 131 in the local schools share ideas and information in three -five minute, speeches.. Brookside speeches will be shared in classrooms during January and early February, with some speeches to be shared in the gym on Feb. 15. Some primary students will have the opportunity to practise and share story -telling rather than speeches. We're happy to see the snow balk for winter fun! Some amazing snow forts are being constructed. Please remind young folk to dress warmly for outdoor play, and to stay away from roadside piles of snow. Snowplow drivers are careful, but children playing in snow by the road are often hard to spot. Have a happy and a safe New Year.
