ADVICE
in the lungs caused by nitrogen
dioxide. Incidents of poisoning
most often occur when a farmer
believes he must level off the silage
at the top of the silo. In many
cases, this is a job better left un-
done.
Indicators of silo gas are:
1. a brown or yellow haze at the
silage surface or near the feed -
room floor,
2. the coughing of livestock
(animals close to the floor are
exposed to heavier gas concen-
trations than a person
standing),
3. dead flies, cats, or mice on the
feed -room floor.
Tests have shown that running a
blower for 20 minutes will likely
disperse the gas if the silo surface is
within 15 feet of the top of the silo
and the silo doors are all closed.
However, silo gas is unpredic-
table. It's best to stay out of the
silo.
Be careful if there are open silo
doors. The gas may spill down the
chute. If there are open doors,
keep the feed -room door shut and
disperse the gas with a ventilating
fan in the feed -room.
Always be cautious. There have
been too many tragedies, and re-
cent wet conditions may increase
the possibilities of a problem.
Fire departments are available in
the event of an emergency. ❑

JOBS AVAILABLE
The Bruce County economy will
get a boost next year when a new
distillery begins manufacturing
ethanol, using steam energy from
the adjacent nuclear generating
station.
The joint federal and provincial
project was approved in July and
will be located at the Bruce Energy
Centre five kilometres east of the
station. Using grain from area
farms, a private consortium will
distill ethanol as part of a govern-
ment program to provide a fuel
alternative to replace lead in
gasoline.
During the next two years the
project will provide 50 to 75 con-
struction jobs, and once opera-
tions begin in August of 1987,
there will be 25 full-time
employees.
