Waterloo, Ontario N2L 2R5 (519) 886-4400 NEWS AGRI-FOOD WEEK Agri -Food Week, which begins across Ontario on October 6, is designed to promote awareness of the importance of agriculture and agriculture -dependent industries. Sponsored by the Ministry of Agriculture and Food, the Ontario Federation of Agriculture, and various commodity groups and community organizations, Agri - Food Week is also aimed at en- couraging consumers to purchase Ontario's agricultural products. This year's slogan is Buy the Food Your Neighbour Grows. In 1900, the Ontario farmer pro- duced food for 12 people. In 1945, he produced food for 30 people. Today he feeds 90 people. But to- day farmers represent Tess than tour per cent of the population. Each year, the marketing system in the province handles about 1.3 million cattle, calves, and sheep. Among the crops grown com- mercially in Ontario are peanuts and ginseng. Comparatively speaking, Cana- dians spend a very small portion of their disposable income on food. Only in the U.S. and the Netherlands do people spend less per capita. Ontario exported about $1.8 billion worth of food and agricultural products in 1985. The U.S. takes about two-thirds of these exports. The most popular type of milk consumed in Ontario is two per cent milk. The average Ontarian eats about 222 eggs (directly as eggs) per year. The average hen lays 250 eggs a year. Ontario has 15 -million acres of farm land. In the province, between 130,000 and 150,000 people work on about 82,000 farms. Many more are employed in agriculture - related industries — about 87,000 work wholesaling or retailing agricultural products, for example. Chicken consumption has doubled during the past 20 years and accounts for 20 per cent of the meat eaten in Canada. Fast-food sales account for 40 per cent of the chicken sales. Last year Ontario farmers sold products worth $5.1 billion at the farm gate. ===woR Eitc Q P gt FSR g4G° because LAMONT'S HAS IT IN STOCK!
