Board of Directors Meeting,
August 7, 1986
HCFA, Middlesex,
Lambton Boards,
Exeter Golf Club
Attendance: 65
Dinner 7:15 p.m.
President Doug Garniss of
the Huron County Federation
of Agriculture welcomed
everyone, including OFA Presi-
dent Harry Pelissero, Jack
Wilkinson, and Roger George,
OFA executive members.
Grace was said by Bob Har-
rison, after which everyone en-
joyed the smorgasbord roast
beef dinner.
The meeting was chaired by
second vice-president Brenda
McIntosh, assisted by president
Doug Garniss. Everyone sat in
a circle, introduced themselves,
mentioned what county they
were from and had a few
minutes to make comments on
troublesome situations in agri-
culture today. Some concerns
that were mentioned: off -farm
working to subsidize the farm,
low pricing of farm products,
crop insurance (at present 35
per cent of Canadian producers
have crop insurance), rural
child care (this happens to be a
pilot project for Lambton
County at present; they hope to
have it in effect by next year),
commodity -based farm credit a
concern, the NFU, CFFO, and
OFA should work together,
farmers should have larger farm
organizations to work and fight
together, low commodity
prices, free trade with U.S.,
concern about association
membership, and mandatory
check -offs.
Several individual situations
were discussed on the above
topics. There was a very in-
teresting exchange between the
three counties.

The following resolution was
presented on a motion by Doug
Garniss, seconded by Paul
Klopp.
"WHEREAS the federal and
provincial government policy
is for a 20 to 33 per cent
reduction in the number of
farmers;
and WHEREAS OFA finds
its membership falling
already due to this economic
attribution; and
WHEREAS this government
policy direction will seriously
threaten the family farm
form of agriculture, a basic
premise of OFA
THEREFORE be it resolved
that OFA totally opposes
(direct or indirect) any
policies to reduce the total
number of farmers."
The motion was passed.
