ADVICE
HOW TO
ENHANCE GOOD
EMPLOYEE RELATIONS
Good employee relations is the
first step to having a well co-
ordinated farm team.
Having good relationships with
your employees can take a lot of
the headaches out of the day to day
activities that occur on the farm.
Patience and understanding must
be developed in working with an
employee.
I. Communications: Employees
must know what their respon-
sibilities are, what hours to work,
how much money they are to be
paid, what benefits are available
and how many days are given as
holidays. It is important to
establish the initial ground rules at
the start. In establishing a day's
work for the employee, never ask
him/her to do more than what you
could do yourself.
2. Goals: It is important that the
farm operation and the individuals
working on the farm have goals or
objectives to work towards. Goals
act as motivators keeping people
interested in the work and
challenging employees/employers
to think of new ideas and practices
to improve the operation. Involve
all farm staff in goal setting situa-
tions. Everyone must be aware of
where you, as an employer, would
like the business to be in the
future. Encourage employees to set
goals and work with them in at-
taining these goals.
3. Training: On the job training of
your employees is a worthwhile in-
vestment of your time. Take time
to explain any special procedures
you request for certain jobs. Work
with your staff to ensure they
understand your instructions and
know exactly how complicated
equipment operates.
4. Staff Meetings: It is a good idea
to sit down with employees on a
regular basis to find out if there are
any concerns or to help you solve
problems in the business. Many
times employees have new ideas
for improving operations on the
farm.
5. Praise: Employees need words
of encouragement and praise to
maintain their morale and make
them feel they are an important
