TILLAGE 2000:
LONG-TERM
CONSERVATION PROJECT
Tillage 2000 is a long term on-
farm field -sized research/demon-
stration project undertaken in
1985. This project was initiated by
the Ontario Ministry of Agricul-
ture and Food in co-operation with
the Ontario Soil and Crop Im-
provement Association and the
Department of Land Resource
Science, University of Guelph.
The objective of Tillage 2000 is
to determine the best conservation
tillage system for specific soil
types, climatic zones, and farming
operations which will maximize
productivity and minimize soil
degradation.
This project will be conducted
over the next five years on up to 40
farms across the province. To
date, 25 farms have been selected
with crop rotations and tillage
treatments established.
On each farm the conventional
tillage system practised by the
farmer and at least one conserva-
tion tillage system will be placed in
a field length, side by side com-
parison. Within each tillage com-
parison, up to 12 permanent paired
sampling plots will be established
according to slope position. The
effects of the tillage systems on
crop performance and soil proper-
ties will be subsequently
monitored.
Information to be gathered for
each tillage comparison will in-
clude the following: primary and
secondary tillage implements, tim-
ing of tillage, depth of tillage,
residue cover, hybrid/variety,
planting date, plant populations,
planting machinery, soil fertility,
fertilizer analysis, rate, placement,
method of application, date of
emergence, and crop maturity —
silking, flowering, heading, and
per cent moisture. Also: crop
yields (hand and machine yields),
nutrient deficiencies, frost
damage, winter kill, hail damage,
weed species and populations,
herbicides, date, method and rate
of application, pests — insects and
slugs, insecticides, crop diseases,
soil profile descriptions, estimates
of soil loss, and labour, materials
and machine input for economic
analysis.
Each farm will be identified with
a Tillage 2000 sign. For more in-
