NOG 2H0 519-528-3000 1-800-265.3006 - ,v"moi+ continues to move upward in what seems to be a comfortable, gradual uptrend. A recent Cattle On Feed report indicated a 43 per cent in- crease in placements — normally a fantastically large increase — but the market did not react in an ex- tremely negative fashion. The reason the market did not react badly was because the "place- ments" figure is calculated as a percentage of last year's placement number. As it happens, last year's placements were the lowest in many years. Using last year's number in a comparative analysis with the current placements therefore created an artificially high placement figure. October Live Cattle finished at 59.10 on August 21, a gain of .33 from levels of a month ago. **HEDGERS** might be watch- ing for opportunities in three areas: to buy CALL options on grains to lock in feed costs, to buy PUT options on cattle when the markets seems to have topped out, or to buy hedge Canadian Dollars on further weakness. Live Hogs — This market con- tinues to move higher, with futures being led by a very buoyant cash situation. Some analysts are noting that the recent hog price increases have not been fully passed on to the retail sector. There will be some consumer reaction if, and when the full brunt of recent price increases is passed on to the retail sector, and this could cool down the market for a while. In the meantime, enjoy it! October hogs closed at 56.30 on August 21, an increase of 2.73 from levels of a month ago. **HEDGERS** had better remember to keep their feet on the ground! High meat prices and cheap grain prices is every- body's dream but realistically it probably won't last for much longer. Watch for signs to: pur- chase CALL OPTIONS on grain to lock up feed costs to July '87, to purchase PUT OPTIONS on hogs to lock up selling prices for the December, February, April, June and July timeframe. ❑ The information contained herein is believed accurate, however, Bache Securities Inc. assumes no responsibility for its use.
