The Rural Voice, 1986-04, Page 59Respiratory
protection
Dust, chaff, chemicals and at-
mospheres in silos and wells and
near large concentrations of
animal wastes are potentially
serious respiratory hazards and ef-
fective respiratory protection is
needed for all persons working in
these environments.
The basic types of lung protec-
tion for agriculture are: the
mechanical filter respirator (or
dust mask), the chemical cartridge
respirator, the gas mask, and the
devices which have a self-
contained air supply or permit
fresh air to be pumped in.
Mechanical filter respirators are
made of fibrous material, and
filter out or trap airborne par-
ticulate matter, e.g.: dust, chaff
and most molds. They are useful in
haying, harvesting, tilling in dusty
fields, applying ordinary fertilizer
and lime, grinding feed, sweeping
up, etc. Dust masks are not effec-
tive against chemicals nor in a tox-
ic or oxygen deficient atmosphere.
Cartridge respirators and gas
masks provide lung protection for
some chemical operations. The

cartridge respirator works well in
limited duration exposures, and is
also effective in extremely heavy
dust and when handling moldy
hay. A gas mask is effective for
relatively short periods and against
specific chemicals.
Know the potential hazard of
the substances with which you
work. Consult your provincial
Department of Agriculture
representative for information. Be
sure your respiratory equipment is
approved by a recognized agency
and that it fits properly. Insure
that all respiratory equipment is in-
spected, maintained, worn and
stored according to the manufac-
turers' recommendations.

on various topics are available

Grassed waterways
Grassed waterways are broad,
shallow (saucer-shaped) vegetated
channels that are designed and
constructed to carry concentrated
flows of surface water across
farmland to a suitable outlet.
These waterways are effective in
preventing gully erosion and are
often constructed in natural
depressions across fields where
water collects and flows to an
outlet. They are constructed to
natural grade and conduct water
safely down slopes. The vegetation
in the channel slows the water
flow, protects the soil surface and
thereby reduces the soil -cutting ac-
tion of the water.
Grassed waterways can be
beneficial on any cultivated area
where concentrated surface runoff
occurs. They are particularly effec-
tive in controlling erosion where
runoff has caused severe rill ero-
sion damage. Waterways can also
be employed as outlet channels for
contour strip cropping, contour
diversion channels and as inlets to
gully control structures.
There is nothing more wasteful
of productive farmland than a raw
gully dividing a field. Grassed
waterways provide for the orderly
channelling of surface runoff to a
suitable drainage outlet. With
regular fertilization and reseeding
where necessary, grassed water-
ways can be harvested for hay or
silage and can last indefinitely. ❑
